Tow car dilemmas

Hello Everyone,
We really appreciate all the useful info you have posted and learning loads.....and on the subject of loads.....
We have been campervanners for 16 years and our Toyota Hiace is now getting old and we are too, so the comforts of indoor toilet and more space whilst still feeling like a familiar space with lots of light have led us to Eribas. We are hoping to buy a Troll 530, choosing the Troll layout seems nice and straightforward but the towing car is a whole other world! We have used the tow car - caravan matching tools on CCC and Caravan and Motorhome but still confused by noseweights, torques, towball heights etc. Very helpful that many of you put your tow car onto your profile so that gives us some ideas. Being newbies we hadn't quite appreciated that a larger vehicle will be needed to tow the 1300/1400kg and we would prefer our budget to focus on the Troll rather than the car but any advice on finding a reliable, petrol, economical used vehicle would be very welcome!
Also if you have any ideas on selling a campervan with MOT to Oct 2022 but which needs some bodywork repairs and has a lovely camper conversion that would be great.
Thanks for reading :)

Welcome to the forum and hopefully your purchase of a Troll.
The good news is you do not need to fret so much about your choice of towing vehicle. when looking at car to caravan matching tools they tend to look at an 85% match and assume you are dragging around a big white wobbly box. The frontal area of an Eriba is about 2/3 to 3/4 of that of a normal van, which makes one hell of a difference. The subsequent reduction in wind resistance and drag is significant. If you look at www.whattowcar.com you will get a more realistic opinion on what to expect.
I tow a 1200kg Triton with a 1.5L petrol Audi A3 and am more than happy. Since buying it in 2019 I have towed over 10,000 miles, usually returning 36/37mpg on a good motorway run, dropping to 32/33mpg when fully laden at higher continental speeds. For my next van I'm considering a 1400kg Troll or 1500kg Feeling and would not change the car as a result of this upgrade. You will find the majority of newer vehicles with 1.5 to 2.0L engines in petrol or diesel will easily be up to the job.

Hiya and welcome to the forum they are very good to tow I have towed a wobbly white box and the Eriba is a lot easier no where near as much drag. II tow a Troll with a Skoda Octavia Scout Estate and really like the combination. There will be a lot more replies shortly loads of good advice on here. Good luck with your search for your Troll and roll on summer. Morphy

Hi & welcome to the site.
We have a 540 Troll and like Murphy towed with a Skoda Octavia Scout and we forgot that we were towing at times. We changed it for a Karoq Scout and that also tows very well, although I preferred the extra length of the Octavia estate.
The aerodynamics of the Eriba make it a dream to tow and we always feel that we have lots of power to spare.
I'm sur ethat there are many cars that will tow your prospective Troll well. I still prefer a diesel at the moment but will change to a hybrid or electric when the time is right.
Good luck in your search

We have a Triton, so smaller, but we tow with a simple Mégane. Yann says he doesn't know she's there. (!) LOL
One thing I will add is to say that it is only in Britain that people get so het up about tow weight, nose weight..... if you come to Europe you'll see every kind of combination and everyone's cool. Only the Brits have such huge van/car combos. With a little Eriba, you can be much more relaxed.
