Buying an old Eriba puck

Just in the process of buying an old Puck. Seems in really quite good condition for its age except for a small bit of rot in the floor under the wardrobe cupboard ( fns) . Hopefully I can sort this out. Otherwise it looks a nice sound and simple small caravan. Caravanning like it used to be?
Anyway nice to have found this forum and looking forward to “ picking your brains”

Welcome to the forum Andy and best of luck with the maintenance jobs. Have a very close look at the small square section steel tubing that runs around the bottom edge of the van. If you see anything worse than a light surface rust you can rub off then seek advice from a caravan engineer.

Colin. Thanks for your message. Going to have a final look at the van on Friday. Can you be a bit more specific about where the steel tubing is that that I need to check. From my recollection the metal sides of the van protrude about an inch below the van floor. Does this steel tubing run around the inside of the van wall connecting it to the flooring?
Any help much appreciated. Andy

Andy, where the skin on the outside is at the lowest level it is edged with a bit of aluminium trim. If you look underneath the van behind all this lot you will see what looks like a 20mm square section tube acting as a ring beam to the floor and structural steelwork under the van.
Eriba's are comparably good as regards damp but some do have rust issues and sometimes damp/delaminated flooring.
The metalwork will not have been galvanised, but will have been painted. This obviously wears with time and you usually get a very light rust on some of the steelwork, the sort where a light wire brush and repaint will put right. If there is any heavy pitting on any of the metalwork you will need to look closer. If you see any holes then walk away. It is a specialist repair and very expensive.
If you see any damp on the wallboards inside then likewise, walk away. You do not know what lies behind.
As regards patches of flooring that need replacement. This is a pain but a diy doable job and would require stripping out some of the vans built in furniture. Whilst doing this it would give you the opportunity to do any electrical updates you might want.

Not wishing to argue with an expert and it’s sensible advise to walk away from internal damp but - we have damp staining around our front window. When we bought our van it was spotless. 3 months later, away in Scotland, water poured in around one of the front windows. By the time we got home and the van to John E there was a large stain. Window seal was changed, no more leaks. Just had the van serviced, damp meter showed no damp at all in the van. So unknown damp is a big worry but a damp meter should tell you if there is an ongoing problem. If in doubt though, as Colin says, walk away. Good luck.
