Golf estate 1.5 petrol turbo 130PS as towcar

Hi, I'm new to the forum. As yet we have no caravan. We have settled on the Eriba 530 with rear dinette as our layout and potential purchase. My question is whether are current car is suitable as a towcar, at least for a while. The weights and figures seem OK but we have no experience and would be grateful for advice, particularly if someone has experience of that combination or similar.

Welcome to the forum. We have the 150bhp version of the engine in my Audi A3. My Audi will be lighter than your Golf Estate and I have no problems as regards pulling my 1350kg Eriba Feeling.
The engine is easily up to the job. When towing my 1200kg Triton I typically achieved 34-36 mpg and 40mpg when in NL. With my heavier Feeling I typically achieve 32-34 mpg. I tow in the 50-55mph range, 60mph occasionally.
Your tow bar limit is 75kg, but I would aim for 60-65kg max. With my 75kg limit VW Golf based Touran,Yeti and Audi A3 I have towed 900kg Familia, 1200kg Triton, 1300kg Troll and 1500kg Feeling, All have been best around this 60-65kg nose weight.

As I've only recently found out, it's the torque that your car puts out that is all important.
It hasn't effected me as I drive a 2 litre diesel.
I think the magic figure for petrol engines is in excess of 200 nm.

Howard. If it's of any help to you, earlier 530s, pre 2000, weigh in at only 1000kg gross laden weight so are far easier to pull.

We have a 1999 Troll 530 which we bought 14 years ago and it is still going strong as are many others on the road. You should find a good one for about £8000.
