Just back from another trip to Norfolk today where I watched in amazement while 2 men on the site loaded a Range Rover onto a trailer and drove it away.

First they hitched the trailer to the tow-car then backed up to the Range Rover then after setting the ramps winched it onto the trailer with no support under the trailer rear............so the trailer rear went right down on the ground pulling the tow-bar upwards with great force.

Then when it was loaded they had the weight all wrong on the trailer with the engine well forward of the trailer wheels so most of the weight was on the tow-bar.

The vehicle obviously weighed much more than the trailer was capable of carrying (note how close the wheels are to the mudguards) and where the weight is distributed (usually at the front where the engine is)

A close-up of the tow-car shows the position of the wheels in the wheel arches (the trailer is counter balancing the tow-car engine) and the front wheels are almost off the ground The steering must have been very light with all the weight on the back wheels

If you look at the trailer picture again you can see the only thing holding the Range Rover on the trailer is the winch cable at the front and a bit of chain at the back

I hate to think how many laws they were breaking and was very pleased not to be anywhere near it when they drove off site and on to the public highway.

The trailer had a 50's\60's style coupling which was probably a 2" coupling on a 50mm towball and at a guess I would put the noseweight at somewhere between 1\2 a ton and a ton.

Thats how not to do it in a big way

Just for the record, it's a LR Discovery, and although badly loaded the trailer is probably well up to the job.
It's the tow car that's not up to the job.
