Hi Guys , so got the triton , spent the last week cleaning it, managed to get a replacement folding glass top for the cooker (turned out these are rare as ducks teeth , huge thanks to CAK tanks who had the last one in the country, getting ready for our first touring holiday , being new to towing a van I wondered what eriba folks views on towing stabalizers are? I have only towed the van a short distance and not loaded, it followed us faithfully on that trip but now I plan longer trips mainly on motorways I wondered if it would be best to fit one? the van has an alko hitch but it does not consist of any sort on stabalizer, I welcome any advice, many thanks

I'm probably not the best bloke to comment on this Paul but are you sure your ALKO hitch isn't a stabiliser as well?
We have one of these fitted to our van and for the first time ever a few weeks ago, we set off from the camp site having hitched the van up to the car but we forgot to tighten the stabiliser ratchet.
Within a few miles I could tell the difference as the van was rolling a bit. Jumped out, tightened it up and wow, what a difference.

Exactly my experience. It's very noticeable if you've been used to towing with a stabiliser and then forget to set it.

Hi thanks for the reply, the hitch looks like the type fitted to a normal trailer, no sort of extra handle or locking device, the van is a 1994 triton bsa, I will try and take some pics tomorrow, many thanks

Definately a stabiliser for me personally I would go for the combined hitch and stabiliser Alko etc, you can buy new or second hand and they will nearly always come with a hitch lock which on some can be used when towing. Wheel locks vary, so have a good look again the newer ones are lighter, smaller and possibly more effective. Mine is a monster and I'm used to it so I stick with it but if I need to buy again I would go for a through the wheel type so maybe a Nemesis ultra? again available zecond hand, if you did go for one of these make sure you get the later model with a "raised shroud around the locking nut" hth

We towed our Triton around for 7yrs, all over the continent and Britain, on all sorts of roads in all sorts of weathers, and never had any stability problems.
We now have a Troll with a stabiliser hitch, and to be honest there's no real difference in towing.
If you don't have a stabiliser fitted already, I probably wouldn't bother.

we have also towed various trailers with and without, you tend to notice the different in high winds, pot hole roads and when large trucks and coaches pass, when going down a steep hill.if caravan loaded abit wrong,
if fitted I use,
if new to tugging would possibly invest in a tow hitch one, rather than the long bar blade.
make sure the tow hitch is the correct weight for van the alko 1300 is on our troll (max weight is 1200kgs for our eriba)
eribas normally tow well with the aerodynamics
the choice is yours

I had a Puck without a stabiliser and it towed no problems except for on my first trip out, I hit some spilt diesel on the motor way and it did a bit of an Irish jig behind me I've now got the Alko 1300 stabiliser on my Familia and to be honest it gives me extra confidence. I've never had a wiggle in high winds or when the white van man flies past at 80 mph. If you do add an Alko stabiliser you will need an extended tow ball or a swan neck.

I guess the tow hitch will be like this one on my 1989 Puck

P1290543.JPG - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I always found the Puck followed on nicely ................having said that it followed a Ford Ranger pickup which with the best will in the world never could be described as agile

I always found the Puck followed on nicely but you do need to remember as with towing anything that sharp bends and roundabouts need to be slowed down a bit more for when towing....................(as I almost found out with 1\2 ton of kit in my trailer one day)

My suggestion would be ............try it and see for a while .............or if you are really worried and have the money spare bolt on an alco 1300 hitch ...............a Triton should be well within their range (I have one on my Triton)

TIP

the hitch in my photo will benefit from a dab of grease on the tow ball

Important note

Never grease the towball when used with a stabiliser hitch.
