Caravan Club Ferry Booking

A word to the wise. If like us, you're a Caravan Club member who uses their ferry booking service, check first with the ferry company as you're not always getting a better deal with the CC.
We booked an outward and return crossing with Brittany Ferries using the Caravan Club "Overseas Holiday" website. However, as an after though, we later checked the prices on the Brittany Ferries website to find that we had not made any saving. What's more, the CC take a £75 deposit whereas the Ferry company only takes £35.
Having spent the best part of this morning on the phone arguing with various members of the CC team, I'm feeling a little more satisfied that I've made my point. It would appear that the Caravan Club Overseas Holiday department, like the several other departments in the club, is totally autonomous and thinks of itself as a booking agent and not necessarily a club service.

Thankyou for making us aware of this we have been looking at a trip to Hameln in the north of Germany to see old friends and we were thinking of booking through the CC, our thoughts have now changed. We will do what we always used to, just book by the cheapest we can find, we will only travel through Dover because neither of us like boats / ships / or the ferry

It's been a long time since we ventured abroad with either a caravan / camper or motorhome but the driving does'nt phase me and we would like to take in parts of the Rhine and Mosel, then go North East to Hameln, then down to Innsbruck (via Mittenwald) and from there "do" a few of the mountain passes which we remember.

A lot of driving but I like driving anyway

I think you'll find that if you use the CC to book Dover/Calais P & O sailing, you will get an appreciable discount. We have for the past few years so didn't bother to check first for a longer crossing. However, it's just as well to check first whichever crossing you use.

Um, having only booked once through the CC (Zeebrugge > Hull & return) I can't say that we're exactly experienced in these matters. However, when I first checked on the P&O site the crossing was £600 plus whilst via the CC it was £412.36 including meals - dinner & breakfast.

With the intention of returning to the Dales once again next year I checked the P&O website as recently as Thursday and the price showing then for the same dates was £770 plus if memory serves whilst with the CC it was £665. Considering the over two hundred pounds increase this prompted me to telephone the CC to enquire as to why the increase was quite so steep and received the following by way of reply.

The prices currently being shown on the CC website are the prices that have been currently received from P&O but do not include any special discounts/promotions etc that are given to the CC. These will come a bit later in the year and I was advised to check their website periodically where the price will no doubt be quite similar to the price we received earlier on this year.

So I'm taking from this not to accept the prices currently shown on the CC website as it really is still quite early - it's not even Christmas yet for goodness sake LOL - but to periodically check back.

Ordinarily, we wouldn't consider booking until February/March, especially the channel ferries, but because we are planning a far longer trip for next year and we are spending less time on that trip, we found we were running out of time well south of Calais.
Previous experience has taught us that it's an expensive hobby ferrying back into the UK by way of Santander but when we discovered that we could get a Santander/Portsmouth summer crossing for a little less than £300 we snapped it up.
The alternative would have been an 800 mile drive back to Calais; that's about £140 worth of fuel, about £50 in road tolls, perhaps 2 or 3 overnight stops (say £60) and then the ferry cost Calais to Dover of circa £70 and after all that we would still be a 90 minute drive further away from home.

Slightly different, but we have always found CC excellent when booking The Tunnel, this year we saved nearly £50 on our return crossing which meant our dog travelled for free.

An update to my earlier posting:

As a reminder, last year we paid £412.36 for a P&O Ferry crossing Zeebrugge > Hull and return - end of August. (Car + 2 adults + caravan + meals).

Less than 2 weeks ago I checked both the P&O and Caravan Club websites for the mid July 2015 crossing prices. The former were advertising a price of £770 whilst with the latter (CC) it was £665 with the advice to check back regularly for updated offer prices.

This morning I did just that and found the price for the mid July crossing to now be £402.70 which is even cheaper than last year. Needless to say I booked - so Dales here we come once again.

Time to check out the prices for your summer 2015 crossings folks.
