I see that Honest John gave more details about the VW chain issues in answer to a query the other day. Apparently they've admitted that the chain maker was using an old tool to cut out the links and it left the link plates with burrs on the edges. This has resulted in early failure. He was answering a query on the 1.2TSi engine but I assume they used the same chain supplier for a range of motors.
