We often meet Motorhomers that live in them all year round, the investment must be huge.
They pull onto site and the really big ones auto-level then the satellite dish rises and sets itself
while they are uncoupling the towed (matching paintwork) compact car or as in one case
reversing the convertible Smart Car out of the literal "garage" at the back end.
Camera reversing with audio so they can listen and if necessary ask people to move out
of the way. I would be tempted (supposing a large lottery win) just so I could wear a captains
'at and park it outside chateau le pew to be annoying

Friends of ours (gawd I hope they don't read this) have had 4 motorhomes in the last four years, ranging from a small T5 size to a really big thing. After using each they have listed the pros and then thought about the cons and sold the first three. The current one is enormous and the biggest so far. With this one, they dislike the noise during journeys with all the stuff rattling about and the fact that they are practically marooned whilst on site, as its a faff to pack up. When they met up with us last year in Italy, they said it was so nice to be able to go anywhere in our van with us, even the supermarket. They admit that most of their huge motorhome is wasted space, although they only do short breaks in it with a 3 week summer european holiday, so they dont need the storage as much as people like us travelling for months on end.

They put theirs into storage for 6 months over the winter. I wonder if they SORN it to save the road fund licence and just have a 6 month insurance policy? I'll ask them when we meet them in Portugal next week!

It's whatever suits you. Everything is a compromise and there are some downsides to every set up.

I do think (and I say this with some knowledge!) that the recent boom in UK registered motorhomes us to some extent the result of civil service pensions and civil service redundancies over the last few years. Public sector pension lump sums and redundancy severance payments will be much reduced in the future. So, fewer people will have the kind of sums necessary to buy and maintain these vehicles. Of course, this will be the same for most of Europe!
