Black smeg blocking the water system
Black smeg blocking the water system

About two weeks into our recent tour we noticed that the sink tap was no longer spraying as normal and seemed to be struggling to discharge water. My first thought was that the submersible pump in the water container might be playing up but when I checked, it was whirring around freely and apparently in good health.
I prodded the holes in the tap with a pin but without much success. Then I noticed that the washbasin tap was also playing up (ours is the blue plastic shower handset on an extending hose). If the tap was set to spray, the flow was poor with most of the jets seeming to be blocked but when I turned it to the tap setting, the flow seemed to be normal - but I then noticed small black deposits in the washbasin.
As I didn't have a spanner large enough to remove the washroom tap spray head and I could see no way of dismantling the sink tap, there was little I could do. My best guess was that a rubber washer had disintegrated and was causing the blockages.
Then, quite suddenly, the sink tap went back to normal delivery but the washbasin flow seemed to get worse.
Yesterday I removed the washbasin tap shower insert and found it almost completely blocked with shiny jet black, film-like deposits that clearly were not rubber. I poked all this stuff out, cleaned all the grooves in the insert with a pin and left the insert to soak in Viakal for a while. On reassembly, everything works perfectly.
But where had I seen deposits like these before?
Some of you may recall a discussion about black deposits in the toilet flush tank that appear in the toilet bowl from time to time. These appear to be some sort of mould that can be difficult to remove. When I stripped my (manual) flushing pump some time ago, I thought that the pump bulb was made of black plastic when in fact it is made of clear plastic. I'm pretty sure that the black stuff in my water system was the same as the mould in the toilet. Mould in toilet
But why should this have appeared?
When I laid the caravan up for the winter last October, I drained the water system, switched off the 12v supply to the taps and left them open. Before I used the van again I made up a solution of Milton sterilant and left it in the system overnight after running some through the taps. I then thoroughly flushed the system out with clean water before using the system on holiday.
Could there be low point in the pipework somewhere where water had lain allowing the mould to grow?
Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what steps have you taken to prevent a recurrence?

I have never been aware of it in the freshwater system although there are signs of something similar in the blue aqua roll filler tube so we tend to replace it every year.
We had the toilet flush black stuff problem in our last Eriba which was not easy to eradicate. Wasn't there a suggestion that it was encouraged by the pink rinse aid stuff which has since had a change of recipe.
I would recommend reading Zappy's blog all about motorhome and caravan water systems.....http://zappysblog.co.uk

I actually use this stuff which is a 3-way process and takes at least a couple of days to complete. http://www.amazon.co.uk/MultiMan-RedBox-125/dp/B005E7AYLY
Unfortunately it's a German product which is readily available to us over here but as you can see, very little by way of information is given on the Amazon UK site. In essence though it's a process for first cleaning the entire water system, killing germs and other bacteria, fungus and viruses followed by protecting the sysem from a build up of Calcium deposits (useful if your van has a hot water system).
I've used it over our 2-year ownership of the van and the fresh water system is probably now cleaner than the day we picked it up.
There's also a BlackBox version http://www.amazon.co.uk/MultiMan-BlackBo...iman+yellow+box that should be used when buying a used caravan that has not been in service for a while along with a YellowBox system for new caravans whose fresh water system has never been in service.

Regarding the flush tank I bought some of this stuff the other day hoping it will stop the black stuff that broke my water pump last year (I'm not using the pink Flush liquid anymore)

AquaSol is a powerful liquid biocide, used to purify on-board water tanks by killing all water-borne bacteria and virae.
I'm only using it in the loo water so far............will see how it goes.

It can be as a result of not draing your inlet pump and it's attached hose, I replaced one of our hoses on the Burstner with clear "food quality" hose havingbeen caught out! And I should of known better! It cured the problem and I used to hang my pump and hose up and left it to dangle to empty out any trapped water
Likes to wax and have a smooth finish! Has an empty space where once a very polished Eriba stood😎

I had this problem with my toilet flushing system a few years ago so I phoned Thetford.
They advised me to fill the system with dilute Milton ( chlorine based baby bottle sterilizer, freely available) and leave it for a few days to kill the mould and then flush the system.
This worked very well and I did not need to dismantle anything.
I always put a small amount of milton in the water systems between outings and before the winter draining so any water left in will have a bit of chlorine in it. Just flush the system before you use it again. If it is safe for babies it is probably safe for me
