Reversing brake on 1978 Pan

The caravan brake needs to be manually disabled on this early model by means of a lever which pops out, restoring the brake, when you drive forwards again. If you're manouvering however, you don't want to have to keep getting out to manually disable it. Does anyone have a solution to this? Why does the lever have a slotted fitting? Is this something to do with disabling the reversing brake?
Thanks for any clues or hints you can offer.

Like this?
You could try tying it in position with a bit of cord...........remember to remove before going on the road or you will be without the caravan brakes

Yes, I think tying it up is going to be the answer. Thx
