Help please! driving licence

Today I saw an increasingly rare sight. I've seen them before but they are becoming more rare and I am struggling to find information about the licence requirements.

The vehicle in question is an HGV towing a trailer towing a trailer, so just to clarify it's a tug pulling 2 x trailers, does anyone know or can you PLEASE point me in the right direction to find out?

I know we have discussed these vehicles before and you sometimes see them on travelling fairgrounds or circuses, years ago the likes of Pickfords (removals, which then catered for over large or excessive loads) used to employ specialist drivers, and I remember a few years ago watching a tv programme dedicated to this subject, and there were only a very few people entiitled to drive them.

PLEASE! any help gratefully received,

Just found this on another forum, Graham, where the original poster was asking about towing two trailers loaded with bikes behind a car. It may point you in the right direction.

Towing 2 trailers is only permitted if the tow vehicle is a goods vehicle
registered with DVLA as a Showman's Vehicle which is a taxation class. You'd
have to show them that you were a circus/fairground owner/operator. AFAIK it
used to only be permitted at certain times and days even with the showman's
plate-though that may have changed.

Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 (c. 22)

"showman's goods vehicle" means a showman's vehicle which—
(a) is a goods vehicle, and
(b) is permanently fitted with a living van or some other special type of body or superstructure forming part of the equipment of the show of the person in whose name the vehicle is registered under this Act,
"showman's vehicle" means a vehicle—
(a) registered under this Act in the name of a person following the business of a travelling showman, and
(b) used solely by him for the purposes of his business and for no other purpose,

in Australia they are called road trains and they do it all the time,
but am not sure a if road trains are allowed on uk roads, unless under special uses
sometimes recovery trucks have to do it for moving class 1 off motorways

Brian, Thankyou, I trawled and trawled trying to find it

Pop, yep I guess towing an HGV is an example, but it was more the "regular" use of a vehicle I was after, which I think Brian has found

I'd still like to know how you get "that" licence, I'll keep looking.

A big THANKYOU to both of you, if anyone else has any more information please share it with me

I'm intrigued Gray. Are you thinking of running away and joining a circus?
