Electrics - help!? 😤

Hi all

We are currently in Cirencester and we're have a lovely time until the electrics went. We've had some check the lead which is fine so there is electric coming into the van but we can't get anything to work. We have one of these BIP things (sorry, I'm not very technical! Picture attached). Any one have any ideas??

Thanks in advance

Chris

Thanks

If you do a search for 'BIP' you'll find quite a few threads where this has been discussed.

If you can 't find what you need, come back and we'll do our best to help.

Sorry if the previous response wasn't very helpful but I was using my phone and long replies are a bit of a challenge.

When you say that nothing is working, do you mean 12V (lights) and/or 240V (fridge, sockets) or both?

How old is your van?

Could you accidentally have knocked the switch on the front of the BIP into the off position?

Have any fuses blown?

Does the BIP unit smell hot?

Let us have more details and we'll do what we can to help.

EDIT PS Do you have a a voltmeter installed in the caravan or do you have access to a multimeter so you can check voltages across the battery terminals?

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for replying, I really do appreciate it.

The lights work but no power sockets or fridge. We have a 2009 Familia. I'm really not v good with electrics, I did try to take the fuses out to check them but couldn't remove them.

We've now given up fiddling, decided to leave a day early (tomorrow) and are having a few pints in the sun!

I've booked the van in with an engineer on Wednesday. When it's been looked at ill post an update.

Thanks again for replying.

Chris

That's probably a wise decision, Chris.

Your 12V electrics should continue to work for a while exactly as if you weren't connected to EHU but the battery will run down as it will no longer be receiving a charge from the BIP unit. The voltage across the battery terminals will be below 13.8 and gradually drop as the lights are used.

My 2003 BIP didn't have an earth leakage circuit breaker merely an on/off switch that I thought was an ECB - since rectified - but your later system may simply have tripped the ECB (if fitted) when, for example, boiling a kettle or using a toaster. Have you checked the switch on the front of the BIP? It may simply need re-setting.

You could then turn on any appliances one by one until you find what has tripped the system.

Another rather basic thought, could you have tripped the site 240V supply by exceeding the maximum amperage? That really should be the first thing you check. I was doing it regularly in France last month at one site with a 6amp supply but I'd have thought that UK sites had a more generous amperage. As I've very little experience of UK camping, I may well be wrong.

So, to summarise, 1. check site supply at distribution point - has the switch tripped and if so, re-set it? 2. If all OK and 240V is definitely getting to the BIP unit then have you tripped the BIP circuit breaker? If neither of these works then it's electrical engineer time.

I turned up at a site and found my electrics weren't working and looked at the EHU and wondered if the sits post required anything more than plugging in. Turns out I had hit the trip switch when putting something under the seat. Licked it on and hey presto all worked again.

I think it was tongue in cheek.

Just a quick update on this, the RCCB packed in and needed replacing. It's now been replaced and everything is working as normal. At nearly £150 I hope it doesn't make a habit of it!!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to reply. 👍

Glad you got it sorted, guys, and that it didn't break the bank!

Thanks for updating us. Your feedback is useful.

We now know that sometime between 2003 and 2009 (does anyone know when?) the mains switch on the BIP was replaced with an RCCB so that's something else we can add to the collective knowledge of the forum ready to advise anyone with a similar problem in the future.
