13 pin connection
Hi, on my last outing the twisted collar on the connection came right off and all the pins connections were showing I made do with sliding it back on and using a strong outdoor tape to get home which worked fine. I was about to get a new plug but had a look and pulled it off again to check if it is something I could attempt which it was. Then I slide the collar back on and gave it a twist and tighted the connector at the cable end. It turns fine and now I can't get it apart again. I have pulled off a perished thin rubber seal indicated by the arrow but it now won't budge and seems to work fine.
Would it be best to replace or can I leave it and carry my magic tape and WD40 should there be any water ingress? and see how it goes.

If the seal is missing I would be tempted to change it as there can be a fair amount of power going through there if the fridge and leisure battery are working through it while towing.
I paid about 7 pounds for the one I fitted last year so not overly expensive to do.
There are a lot of wires in there and each must not touch any other so a careful job is better than a rush job.
Also I found the diagrams for wiring them were pretty useless as the inside of the plug is on 2 levels (mine was anyway) so do draw a diagram of the old one and where each wire goes before removing it.
There will be 2 colour wires in there what I call striped ones which I wrote down as White/ Blue etc and single colour wires too.

It may well be ok without changing but if it fails it will most likely be on the road when its pouring with rain, .........sods law.

Avoid using WD40 on the towing plug and socket, it can cause damage to the polycarbonate plastic. Use Tri-Flow which will do the same job but will not attack the plastic.
When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!
Thank you all for the help. I shall look into it, although I first haver to try to get them apart again! as it is locked fast and working as it should. I did find this which is very useful reading.

That's a great article about the workings of the 13 pin plug.
The extra green cap can be screwed stuck or riveted onto the aluminium A frame as a keeper for the plug.
The article did not mention the way the flat round disc on top of the plug is used to hold the plug in the correct position in the socket 'cos the socket flap clips down into it when inserted correctly.
