So, how much do you reckon your Eriba is worth?

When we bought a five year old Triton 420 GT from AL in May 2011, I never thought that five years later I'd need to insure it for quite a bit more than I originally paid. Who has ever heard of a caravan actually increasing in value with age? Most seem to depreciate in a gravity assisted manner being worth something like 50% of the purchase price after three or four years, much like cars.

I'm at the insurance renewal stage and just having had a bodywork repair carried out am particularly conscious of the possibility of further accidental damage during my ownership. But how do you know what sums to insure?

My eyes were opened when I went to AL's second-hand Eriba page to do some research. I reasoned that as my Eriba came from there, it was reasonable to use their prices as a guide to replacement values. When I looked yesterday they had a 2000 420GT (three years older than ours but without a mover or Trumatic heater) priced at £10,500 and a 2005 420GT (two years newer) with an identical specification to ours for £14000.

At a rough guess then, a 2003 420GT would be priced somewhere in the region of £13,000 (£2,000 more than I paid) so that's what I've just insured it for. I've also upped the awning cover from £500 to £1,000 but left the contents cover at £1,000 giving £15,000 total cover.

Having had the recent claim, my renewal premium was slightly up on last year's but today's increases in cover only added £11 to the quoted figure which represents, I think, good value in the circumstances at £188.00.

Although my recent claim became a little fraught and dragged on for longer than I would have liked, it was largely my fault for refusing to believe that a non-Eriba specialist could do an acceptable repair. For this reason I decided to stay with Cover4Caravans (Alan Blunden & Co Ltd, Southend) as I cannot fault their customer care throughout the claim process despite my occasional truculence. Usual disclaimers.

If you are nearing insurance renewal, might I suggest that you check current second-hand values before accepting your renewal quote as you could well be under-insured.

Good thinking Brian. I was tipped off, side of the mouth, don't tell the boss etc by the guy we dealt with at AL, he's gone now, great pity as he was dead good before these young boys got in. I digress, he said we would buy it back at the same price if you look after it. £8k

usually look at the brand new price of a basic eriba, work out the added extra options price on that figure and take certain amount off for age of mine, then check the online market. to compare
recently realised ours is more custom to my needs than first thought, the insurance companies will only insure against the basic model so if you have extras your going to be under insured.. if your eriba is wrote off due to another persons fault, and you have a new for old cover can you afford to loose possibly up to or over the £4000 of extras on your new eriba??
recently wondered if should be insuring like a classic car fully covered but with the option of being able to buy the eriba back should it being beyond economical repair, what do you think and is there a policy like that??
must say detest insurance time, its hard work.. and the fact they only discount for the clubs towing course not any other driving qualifications is beyond understanding..

Marmite is still young enough to be covered on a new for old basis. At our last renewal we were advised, by the insurers, of the price for a basic spec replacement 418.
Those nice people at Jandi sent us a pdf of the Hymer options and price list and we were able to insure for the cost of a like for like fully loaded 418.
The base models only come as a 3 berth, and the standard hob is only 2 ring etc etc. Had we accepted the basic spec replacement we think we would have been under insured to the tune of about £2500. Having said that, with the faults and problems many people seem to be having with their brand new German built Eribas we are not in any sort of hurry to change our so far faultless French built 2007 model.

We recently sold our 2004 PuckL for more than we paid for it and we had 8 years of use out of it. I call that pretty good going. We insured our 2008 420Gt (on the day we picked it up) for the price we paid for it. Will need to check the prices again when we renew though.

I've had to double the insured value for my 1995 Puck, after looking at the AL site. I know that they wouldn't offer me anything like that for mine but didn't know what else to do.
