A sad day today as it sees the passing of not only Muhammed Ali but also Fiddler extraordinary Dave Swarbrick. (Fairport Convention).

Yes, totally agree Dave. Although perhaps not everyone's favourite in the Henry Cooper years, Ali has to us anyway, proved that he was a great man. His Parkinson interviews are classics.

We had not heard the news of Dave Swarbrick's passing. Most of our Fairport concerts had Ric Sanders on fiddle but correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Dave Swarbrick return to the lineup for a few gigs about three years ago?

That was the last time we saw them and Ric Saunders didn't appear too happy on stage because he had competition. It was the time that Dave Pegg's son stood in for his Dad because Peggy had damaged his hand on a wine glass

Ali remembered yes, Swarbrick no, but I wish I had. Sad day indeed

Our youngest's first gig was Cropredy (Fairport's home gig) in the summer of '94. She was only 18 months old and fell asleep on the grass at about 11pm whilst her parents and sisters were still bopping (is that word still used). It was incredibly hot, the one shop in the village was rationing bottled water as they couldn't keep up with demand. Those were the days, hot English summers and live music in the open. Aah!

I saw Dave with Fairport Convention in 1970 for the 1st time and last saw him with Martin Carthy last September, Dave was in a wheelchair and had oxygen tubes but he could still play that fiddle

Just seen on his website that Radio 4 is broadcasting his obituary on Friday at 4pm http://www.folkicons.co.uk/swarbmenu.htm.
