Hi, I have bought a second hand pyramid sun canopy, which also has the sides, on ebay. Unfortunately I think it is for a Puck rather than my Pan as it is shorter than the distance between the awning 'connector things' on the side of the Pan. I was wondering about moving the 'connector things' but I don't really want to make any extra holes in 'Doris'. Might there be a solution or should I just try to resell the awning? I'm very grateful for any ideas.

By 'connector things' do you mean brackets like these but made of alloy rather than nylon?

Are you sure if you moved the brackets (either one or both) to accommodate the short awning that it wouldn't interfere with either the door or the window?

If it wouldn't, moving the bracket(s) isn't a particularly taxing job provided you've got a decent electric drill, suitable HSS drill bits (a small one for the pilot hole and the right sized one to take the stainless self-tapping screws), some non-setting sealant (butyl mastic rather than silicone bathroom sealant), several cups of tea and a judicious amount of care and patience. It's a classic case of measure twice - at least - and drill once.

You'll be left with two redundant holes (four, if you have to move both brackets) in both the awning rail itself and the infill strip. One way to solve that is to attach one (or a pair) of the oval nylon spacers which sit behind the brackets with extra stainless self-tapping screws of the same diameter but one size shorter, using mastic in the holes first. It's very important to seal any and every hole you make in the body, whether there's a screw in it or not.

Jandi (the Scottish dealer) will supply any extra nylon spacers and/or metal brackets you need.

If you've no option but to move both brackets you could, of course, just add extra ones and leave the existing ones where they are.

The most elegant solution is to put short screws in any redundant holes and renew the awning rail infill strip. That'll cover their heads, just as it does the existing screws which attach the rail to the body of the caravan.

The simplest solution of all might well be to sell the awning and buy one which is the right size, as you say yourself, but it's worth bearing in mind that not all the awnings ostensibly designed for a specific model of van are necessarily the same length anyway.

I've been there and done that with a Troll awning, having had to move three brackets.

There's one other thing. A photo of the existing brackets would be helpful. There are instructions on how to attach pictures in the 'Help for Contributors' section.

I know it's a faff to take them and attach them, but they really are an absolute godsend, both for people keen to help and as part of an ongoing archive for those with similar questions.

It is worth putting on new ones to fit the awning. We have the same one I think and I just added one bracket and used the existing one near the door. Really easy job but use a corded drill to drill the holes as a cordless often isn"t powerful enough.

Thank you so much for all of the information - sorry I couldn't put pictures up but my Eriba isn't kept at home. The awning pictured above really looks great so I shall use all of the ideas and have a go. Thank you!
