I always said I'd never join another caravanning club............................

................................but I've just joined the Camping and Caravanning Club and booked two nights at Chertsey for when we get back from France at the end of September.

Why? Because it made sound financial sense (I hope). The charges per night are a bit complex to work out but for non-members it came to an eye-watering £30ish for a hardstanding with EHU even in the low season. The website 'pushed' joining the club for 'from £37' for two people as this would give us membership discounts plus 25% old gits' discounts.

As our granddaughter will be at Royal Holloway for four years, we will be making a number of visits and together with stays at their other sites, we should more than cover the annual membership fees.

As non-members then, we would have been paying £60 for two nights but having joined the club on line, we will now pay £42 saving £18 on the stay. Do that twice and we get our membership fee back.

It all seems too good to be true - so what have I missed?

I don't think you've missed anything, but if your stays are for only one or two nights you can reduce the costs further by opting for a pitch without a hook up.
We've booked a six night stay at Graffham without leccy and saved more than the cost of a large gas refill, £5 a night to power the fridge and kettle when we do have a hook up. I confess that in the winter months we do pay for a hook up so that we can use the electric heater in the van but from about March onwards we do off grid. We prefer CCC sites, they seem to be a little more relaxed on the pitching arrangements (anyway you like mostly providing it's within the pitch boundary and you've maintained the fire safety gap) but you do tend to get allocated a pitch. They also are competitive on ferry crossings and in our experience will contact you en route if there is any sort of problem with the sailing likewise if you have to change bookings all it takes is a quick call.

Thanks. That's worth thinking about.

Do you (or anyone else) have any experience of their health and travel insurance and how it compares with the Caravan Club's Red Pennant on price and quality?

I am guessing that Chertsey fees are higher due to it's close proximity and access to Londonium. Good site, local pubs etc and right on the Thames.

It is also worth mentioning that if you are in the RAC and a member of the ccc you can make use of there arrival service that covers you and your caravan in the event of a break down. I checked with the RAC and you have to be a member of the ccc to get this service. Cheers Brian.

I was thinking about rejoining the CC purely to get access to their CLs, does anyone know how the CCC equivalents compare, numbers of sites and costs?

Must admit I'm tempted by the "Old Gits" discounts on their sites, does this apply to their certified sites?

Yo Chris!
I'm sure you don't get the concessionary rates at CLs. Individual owners set their own rates.

CC CL's don't tend to have more than the basics, ie usually no toilet/shower facilities, mostly hardstanding with hook up. CCC CS's are more likely to have toilet/shower facilities as they cater for tent campers too. This is our experience, others may differ
