Omnistore removal

On our recently acquired Troll 552 is a roof mounted Omnistore sun canopy, we don't really want it as at 30 kilos it takes up quite a big chunk of payload, it's held on by 4 bolts of approx. 3/8" dia, through the curved part of the fiberglass roof, easy enough to remove but has anyone any ideas on how to seal the remaining holes?.

Dave,
the bigger the patch over the holes obviously the better the seal. So I guess first thing is you have to decide what you are prepared to accept. With that in mind I would visit a window company and see what they have for blanking off holes. Ideally you should fit your covers/patches with Sikaflex, but a roofing mastic or silicon should also do the job onto a thoroughly cleaned surface [use meths].

Hi Dave.
A previous owner of our van must have drilled the pop-top roof to fit an aerial or similar and plugged the holes with three white rubber or EPDM blind grommets (one about 20mm dia and two of about 12mm dia).

Don't know what they've been sealed in with but they've never caused us any problems for all the years we've owned the van. We've washed and polished the roof on many occasions without causing them to deteriorate.

The 3/8 holes will be for m10 bolts. Options as stated are blind grommets pushed into the holes. Go to machine mart and buy an assorted set of hundreds for a few quit, fit in conjunction with a suitable outdoor sealer.
Another option and a quick and leak free fix is circular tape sections. 25mm or 1 inch discs in old money, cut from white vinyl tape will give you a perfect temporary seal and won't stand out like grommets will. This is what I did on my old Eriba that had been fitted with a car radio aerial previously. These cannot leak if done properly and can be very simply removed and new replacements fitted when desired. If you do this, plug the holes first with snug fitting dowel that is shaped to the roof contour. This provides mechanical support to prevent the tape getting holed by external influences. This step isn't necessary but would make a better job.

The above methods allow you to return the awning to service should you so wish at a later date.

Best of all, they should be filled and painted if you don't wish to ever refit the awning. someone like your local chips away centre can do this and get a totally perfect colour match as the have spectrum analysis to match the paint. There are also mobile caravan people with knowledge and experience of conducting such repairs at your storage location. I believe one such entity is a franchise named caravan medic although there are doubtless other mobile caravan repair entities in your area.

Thanks all, as usual some sage and sound advice, gives me a lot more confidence about removing it.
