According to tomorrows Independent, my road tax is going up 270%. . I must admit I did not see this coming and I will just bite the bullet but there are a lot of folk who drive older cars who cannot afford this increase, like my youngest son.
Car Tax
"In a bid to to tackle climate change by incentivising people to drive less-polluting cars, the Government will introduce significant changes to road tax levels.
Fully electric cars and those powered using hydrogen fuel cells will be exempt from road tax altogether. Cars purchased before the 1 April 2017 deadline that emit less than 99mg/km of CO2 will continue to be exempt from paying road tax for life.
Owners of cars purchased after that date that emit less than 99mg/km threshold will pay £120 per year for the first year and £140 annually thereafter.
Above this level motorists will be taxed significantly more:

"older" cars are not effected ! Only those purchased New after 1st April 2017 are subject to these new rates - at the moment !!!!! so hang on to what you've got :) ( it is also based on a threshold of the new purchase price, where rates increase past a certain purchase cost, irrespective of standard emission rates )

Thanks Ribski, the Indy article didn't read that way.
I see small camper vans like the VW's will also fall foul of these new regulations and probably the over £40,000 luxury tax, whereas larger motor homes based on Fiat/Merc/Renault chassis's will not as they are considered goods vehicles.
