A battery question

How long after charging will it be before the battery level, read by a multimeter, is stable enough to be accurate?

I am asking because my battery is at 12.9v 12 hours after being charged by the Ctek charger. Isn't this too high?

I wouldn't worry about it.

As far as I know the nominal fully-charged voltage (having let the battery settle for about 24 hours after charging) is 12.74V, but it is a nominal figure and does vary a bit either way depending on what type of battery it is (lead acid, AGM or gel), how old it is, the ambient temperature, the time of day, the relative humidity and whether or not your neighbour's cat has left something buried in your vegetable patch.

The only thing that's absolutely certain about any battery is that it'll be as flat as a fart when you really need it.

For as far back as I can remember car type batteries have been called 12 volt, so naturally we expect them to be 12 volt.

A few years ago I did a piece on electricity for the forum and one of the things I found was a chart showing the condition of a so called 12 volt battery.

Battery voltage indications:

12.7 Volts or more = 100% charged
12.5 Volts = 75%
12.4 Volts = 50%
12.2 Volts = 25%
12 Volts or less = Discharged

surprisingly 12 volts means its flat......................

So as said above You should be OK .

One thing you shouldn't do with a leisure battery though is discharge it more than 50% otherwise you risk damaging it (don't ask me the technical reason why!!)

Thank you guys. It's always reassuring to have other inputs.
As Pete says the only sure thing is being let down when it's a pain!
The motor mover went phhht when we were about to hitch up to return home. The journey home seemed to produce enough charge to allow the mover to get the van back into the garden. Now I'm investigating what happened. If the battery holds the current charge then the Schaudt system might be at fault.
Fingers crossed.

ps if the onboard charger is knackered can I just connect the Ctek to the battery without disconnecting everything?

I would say no, if the onboard charger is still working you could end up with 2 chargers both trying to charge the battery.

Better to keep testing the battery condition and see how it goes.
