I don't know about you but we've been plagued with wasps this year!

We normally hang a couple of waspinators and they seem to buzz off - this year we've got 4 up and still they keep coming.

Both neighbours had nests in their roofs last year - and despite the numbers I've killed my guess it'll be our turn this year.

I've nothing against wasps - provided they do their thing somewhere else. When we bough this house there had a nest in a corner for a few years and the end of one of the roof joists had been chewed to nothing!

Know what you mean. They appear out of nowhere whenever I sit out in the garden to eat my lunch making it an entirely miserable experience.

Italy 2003. A very hot summer and plagued by the blighters. We could not cook until the sun went down, especially anything with tomatoes or meat in it.
Well a dutch camper came to our rescue with a 2L plastic bottle and a drop of the cold tea in it, made by Liptons. It is packed with sugar and that is the important bit. Any sweet fizzy drink will do the job.
Unscrew the cap, cut the top off the bottle, invert it and push back into the bottle. Leave an few cm of the liquid in the bottom, run a bit of tape around to seal the edge and hang from a tree away from where you are eating. They will fly in but cannot get. Worked well.

We are suspicious of a nest somewhere in our cottage. The odd one appears now and then through the season. in the loft extension (guest bedroom) and the bathroom. In the guest room there is a mark on the chimney breast, which could be where the nest is, but how the whats it do I find out with out demolishing it.

We've had some pretty bad experiences with wasps over the last few months. Both SWMBO and my older son both drive Defenders, we have all been plagued by wasps which groggily appear from the nooks and crannies after you've driven a few miles and start buzzing around your head, SWMBO has been most affected and now will not wear a skirt in her car in case the unthinkable happens 😳.

My son, Ben, is the only one who has been stung, luckily at slow speed on an industrial estate.

I've even had them coming out whilst driving and towing at 60mph on the A30 and M5, by keeping calm (not easy) and opening a window I can usually coax them out by judicious wafting. Unfortunately on a fast road such as these there is never a convenient lay by where you can stop, jump out, and do whirling Dervish impersonation.

As the weather gets warmer things should improve, we haven't seen one for a few weeks now. For next autumn, when they start looking for an overwinter nest site again I'm going to put one of those small space insect killer blocks in the car and see if that helps keep them out, I've tried spraying he inside with fly/wasp killer and leaving for 10mins before opening all the doors to ventilate before driving off but we would still get them. Ah the joys of country living.

Chris

Look out there's one. 🐝

They used to hibernate in the scaffold board piles at work sometimes up to about 100 in a pile.

Bit of a bugger when you have a load of offcuts in the boot to take home for the wood burner

We had one in our wood burner the other day. I wasn't a nice person, I didn't let it out just watched it trying to get back up the chimney, presumably how it got in. Mind you, I wasn't all bad, I didn't light the fire
