Locked up wheels

Help! Went to storage site to collect my Puck today.... I hitched up and went to drive off, but the wheels won't turn. The Puck moved along the grass a bit but only because car dragged it, and wheels not rotating at all. Think it might be the handbrake locked on, even though the handbrake lever has been released. Any ideas if it could be this, and if so how do I release the wheels? If not then what else could it be? Thanks

I can sympathise. I had this problem when I started caravanning almost 40 years ago. Was given a tip then and to this day I follow it rigidly - never use the handbrake. It is almost certainly the brakes seized on. Gentle rocking back and forward may do the trick but if the brake has been on for some time removing the wheel and hitting the brake drum with a mallet or some such instrument may work.

Good luck.

I've had to fix locked brakes on two separate occasions earlier this year, and both were caused by rusty and seized Bowden (brake) cables.

To determine whether this is the cause of your seizures, you - or somebody else - will need to crawl under the van and check at the axle end of the long brake rod to see if the steel cable inners retract into their sleeves when the handbrake's released.

New cables are readily available and can be changed quite easily. The brake springs (in the drums) will probably also need changing, as they may have lost their tension.
