Dismantling The Old Circular Style Awning Light

Hi,

Our little external awning light has never worked and I was looking to take it apart and give it a good clean and service before perhaps fitting a suitable LED bulb. I had a quick look this afternoon and can't see any obvious way to dismantle it... anyone got any tips? It is circular, about 3" diameter, lives to the top left of the door opening and I guess the lens rotates to switch it on. I don't want to go prising it open in case it breaks, it's 40 years old and probable quite fragile. Here's a pic:

Cheers,
Steve.

Newer models have a switch just inside the door on the side of the cupboard about head hight.

BTW it should only work on hookup to prevent showing a light when towing.

Thanks for this - don't see the switch on ours... Have to say there's a distinct lack of light even on hookup! I've done all the basic checks and short of taking it apart there's not much else to do.

Cheers,
Steve.

Have you tried a GENTLE twist anti clockwise?

Dave you are spot on!!!

Push to depress the centre lens then gently twist anti clock and she's off - brilliant

Cheers,
Steve.

Yes, I've solved all the mysteries in one

Depressing and twisting the lens to remove it revealed the switch mechanism which is very simple and is also operated by twisting the lens!!!

All very good and now I can give the whole thing the once over. At first glance it looks like corroded contacts that are stopping it working. I've just ordered a nice low power super bright LED festoon bulb and I reckon a good clean plus a little vaseline on the contacts will have us up to speed.

Cheers,
Steve.

Presumably there is some sort of seal to prevent moisture getting in, a smear of Vaseline on that too might improve the seal.

A seal???... You'd have thought so wouldn't you, but alas no; the only thing that's sealed is the wires as they go into the caravan through a hole in the skin!

Crikey. Mind you considering that, it's not in bad nick seeing as it's 40 odd years old.

Steve.
