Hi all
I'm after some suggestions really. We're planning a 2 week touring holiday round Scotland in 2018 and I'm trying to come up with an itinerary and suggested camp sites.
Want to mostly see the lochs and glens with beautiful driving roads etc but whilst not pitching too far from civilisation...
Would love to hear any experiences/suggestions you have?
Cheers

Hi.
This is a blog of the tour of Scotland we did in September 2015. We couldn't grumble about any of the campsites we used and we had a really good time.

book early is the best advice, the top of Scotland is rather busy, apparently the route 500 is better than route 66 in USA. (not done route 66)
we stayed just north near to Lairg in middle of Scotland a ccc cs site at Achnairn in the tent,( twas before Eriba.) there was a kitchen a library between the loos and shower also a washing and drying facility, details are listed here Campsites in Great Britain and Ireland
toured by car, to Harrods, opposite the falls where the fish jump, toured up to john o groats where we jumped on a boat to journey round stroma, explored a cave, took in the views there were many, saw deer and generally toured the top, we visited Scourie and went to have a meal in café that was out of food, travelled down to Ullapool, cut back across to campsite. we did day trips to Lairg visitors centre, the corner shops, Wick there is a supermarket there & Caithness glass, went for a paddle to Golspie beach. we didn't plan anything, just came across these
One day we spotted a castle sign so went down the road, alas we didn't find a castle, but did notice all the verges were cut, and the phone had good reception.
We ventured to Bonar bridge just outside walked across a bridge not knowing it was a railway bridge, at the middle a train went over, the bridge shook we thought our end was near. we were going to carry on across the public foot path but that experience had changed plans. went to Tain and Dornoch instead walked on beach,
It took us 9hours from Penrith to Lairg via the A9, but would recommend the A82 for the interest of the towns villages and views.
on route back we took the route to loch ness, Invergarry, before Fort William the car was having bother giving power towing the trailer, we had refuelled in Lairg had no bother before, After a walk around Fort William set off up Rannock moor, it was embarrassing air cooled campers were passing us, finally stopped at Crianlarich where the cat converter finally blocked solid and we had a lift there on through Callender,
although over 12 years ago it was very memorable, we now take spanners with us..
The roads even the passing places ones were in good condition, the details of sites were added to the sites recommended. we found everyone we spoke to was welcoming.
our next Northward visit was to a ccc cs campsite near Kippin, it was next to a river, the ground was spongy but safe, Kippin village was up a hill, has a fuel station, and a shop, there was electric on site but no loo
our goal was to visit Callender nice carpark river spot and town to walk around, also wanted to visit Falkirk wheel, but we aimed to visit many other places, unfortunately this journey was after a visit to Harrogate, our goals were depleted, 3 days later headed to Callender and Falkirk via Stirling passing via Carron valley resr back to campsite. journeying south with eriba was via A811 onto the M8 with the added info, the pope was visiting Glasgow and the motorway would be closed at 12pm,
we arrived at Doe Park Cotherstone, co durham.. where a quick walk turned into a circular of hours.
enjoy your trip
