I know some of you think I already am but its not that type of batty, someone mentioned going on a bat hunt at the last meet (sorry don't remember who?) but it reminded me that I was once thinking of getting a bat detector.

See the last post on page 1 of this travelogue.

Gone fishing

So I had a look at a few websites and some youtube stuff and got some idea of what a reasonable piece of kit would be, called a Magenta BAT 5 digital bat detector it looked like it would fit the bill.

Next step is where to get one? so a google search brought up the usual suspects (all paying to be top of the list) which I always only look at as a last resort and somewhere below them a link to the RSPB website (been a member there for about 40 years) so I had a look expecting it to be expensive from them but was greatly surprised to find it was a lot cheaper than most on ebay.
Well my local reserve is only a couple of miles away and has one of their larger shops on site so I gave them a ring to see if they had one in stock......... not at the moment sir I was told but we can get you one in in a few days so I ordered one over the phone and paid for it with my debit card, hoping to get away for a few days soon so may be waiting when I get back.

Pity it will not be here in time to go with me but looking forward to trying it out.

Hoping it will enhance those warm summer evenings sitting out watching nature with a glass of something nice to enjoy, might have to take a microphone for the laptop with me in future.

We have them in the attic and once or twice they've managed to find their way into the living room.

We didn't have a video camera to hand at the time but here's a re-enactment except it's in Irish. ps. excuse some of the language.

Now I'm back from my trip I went to the RSPB reserve down the road and collected my bat detector along with a bat identification chart and a little pewter bat badge.

With a good set of rechargeable batteries (bought while away) total cost about £110.00 so not a cheap thing to have but I'm looking forward to using it in the future both with and without the van.
