Attaching stuff to the caravan frame
Attaching stuff to the caravan frame

I have a lovely, new to me, little puck called "The Herblet".
Unfortunately he has been a bit battered and modified over the years and I want to do some work on him.
Now he is my first and forever caravan but he has had quite a few homes already, and as he is once again in a new home and might be nervous, I want to make sure that I don't damage or hurt him.
So......
How do you fix items, say a shelf or a new wardrobe carcass to an eriba?
Do you always build up from the floor or can you attach items to the steel skeleton ?
Thanks peeps
Shassa

Cant help you sorry, but there are some real clever restorers on here that have posted links to how they have done it so perhaps a search or they may be along soon.

Shassa, firstly welcome.
The good news is you can fix things but you do need to take care.
The wallboard is only a few mm thick so will not support any weight, so no shelves sorry.
Base units have the load taken by the floor and you should notice at about waist level they are screwed at an angle to the steel framework. These screws are normally a capped plastic disc about 30mm in diameter. You will also find these holding carcases into the floor and possibly in the overhead lockers. The overhead lockers are also screwed into the steel framework and may have some small angle brackets attached to that thin wallboard to reduce rotation help location.
Do not be afraid to attempt fixing to the frame or floor, just make sure you measure accurately and pilot drill first.
If you do have a desire to fix something LIGHTWEIGHT to the wallboard then short self tapping crews and a no-nails type adhesive will do the job. I have used this method for additional shelf supports.
Best of luck - Colin

Thank you for that Colin. I won't put up any shelves then and it's good to know that the walls are out of bounds. I will locate the screws to the steel skeleton and when I replace the wardrobe carcass I will make sure I use the original screw locations. I must admit the thought of attaching stuff to the steel skeleton terrifies me because as I said this is my forever caravan and if I did manage to completely b*gger it up I would be stuck. No money for a new one or a repair shop job. And at the moment my joy at owning this little beauty is such that it is coupled with an equal amount of paranoia ... Cos of course one screw in the wrong place would bring the whole caravan tumbling down around my ears 😂😂😂
PS Skoda owners are always lovely people, it is a Skoda owner who has been helping me to figure out how everything works in my little Herblet.

Hi Shassa & welcome from another pair of Skoda owners who love their Eriba. I'm sure you will have loads of fun with Herbert.
We are newish owners of a Troll 540 so haven't tried to change anything yet - so that is no use to you!
However last summer on our first outing another Eriba family pitched next to us. They had two teenagers and had taken out their top table fixing and had put in a pair of bunk beds for the kids (I think it was an older Troll model). He let me see it and he had done a great job. Like Colin suggested to you, this young man had built the beds up from the floor and had really carefully measured it to be a tight fit that almost wedged in. He then carefully put in a couple of fixings near the top.
t seemed a great solution to their sleeping problem. He said he had kept everything so that when the kids no longer wanted to come with them he could replace it all and have the table again.
Colin's advice to take care seems very good. Enjoy all the fun Herbert will bring. MikeT
