We are in Spain for the winter with our Troll with a fixed double bed. The nights are COLD and so is the mattress surface!! Any suggestion as to what I can buy to keep the the surface warm too the touch at night (but breaths). I'm thinking thermal blanket?!? Please come back soon...............................

If you have a fixed bed with the standard Hymer/Eriba foam mattress do NOT use an electric blanket. I have been told they are not compatable.

1 - To start with I would try and cut out the cold air intake by wrapping some bubblewrap around the air vents under the bed that are to be found towards the back of the van.
2 - A blanket underneath your mattress or sheet will also help a lot as you do loose heat downwards.
3 - If your van has the blown heating option you may be able to remove the connector/outlet so it directs the heat under the bed. I have heard of this being done as an add on conversion by owners buying a T-junction and putting it in line in the flexible tube. Only problem is this means running the heating all of the time. If on gas this would eat into your bottle, but if you have the electric element fitted then no problem. You might find that a plastic plumbing fitting off the shelf from local DIY shed and a couple of cable ties would so a temporary job.
4 - My last suggestion is a wild card. You can get 100w greenhouse heaters. If you have a totally clear area where there is no possibility of anything getting anywhere near such a heater then you could consider this. I do however doubt you have a large open area left under your bed.

Hi Bryn
We had a similar problem when we camped in our Troll 540 in York last winter in freezing conditions. Ours is not a fixed bed but has the muli-functional bed and we set it out to replicate the fixed bed.

A good quality mattress topper made a big difference. We got two single Duvalay Gold toppers that roll away really small. They are expensive but worth it.

As Colin has suggested we also suffered through cold air coming up from the conical air vents under the bed.I think it was Frantone who made a suggestion that worked for us - large plastic wineglasses just fit over the vent and are then easy to take off when it is less cold.

We also invested in a small fan heater that we directed into the space under the bed for 20 minutes just before we went to bed - we didn't leave it on. We also have a small oil-filled radiator which we leave on all night in the centre of the Troll, that gives a little background heat.

Enjoy Spain. Looking out at the East Lancashire drizzle this morning a little cold in the night seems a good swap!!!!!! MikeT

We too went the route of mattress toppers with our previous van but all-in-all found the all round warmth they provided in addition to the quality duvet covers that we have was somewhat overbearing.
For the new van we have opted for a couple of incontinence blankets that lay under the bottom sheet and provide just the right amount of insulation properties that we require. And in the case of............accidents...........

Fleece blanket under your sheet will make a big difference.

Just back from a 2 day trip on biz to Valencia.3 degrees in the early morning , 21 degrees by mid day. I am sure that at night it could be very chilly in the 'van. Try some thermal underwear from Lidl, very good value!

Dog starts off as a good bed warmer, then they spread out and edge you out, you end up on the floor, dog has warm bed to themselves.

Dorsetboy,

If you have memory foam then DO NOT use an electric blanket.
