I like the bit about the latest caravans being lighter so that modern cars can tow them. Last time I looked, a large number of full size caravans are being towed by big SUVs, which are probably three times more powerful, and heavier than the typical 1970s tow car. My dad used to pull a heavy, wooden framed Sprite Major with a 1700cc Morris Ital estate. How we ever made it to France all those times is completely beyond me.

Whilst todays vans are heavier than those when the majority of forum members were growing up, the trend is towards weight reduction.
Modern manufacturing results have reduced the weight of the caravan body, which when attached to todays heavier modern cars should result in a better tow. Unfortunately the standard equipment seems to have increased resulting in a van of the same weight as a few years ago but with a lower payload, or a heavier van. It is not uncommon to see a big wobbly box with a 160kg payload. Owners of newer Tritons and Trolls theoretically could have double this.
