Silicone and fibreglass
was recently asked why not to use silicone on fibreglass, although its always been a warning have worked with, thought should oogle to find out, here are the results so far,
text below from this link
From Charles P. Cohen on the Morgan mailing list:
My fiberglass expert has very nasty words about any wax that contains silicones. They work really well -- but when it's time to re-do the gelcoat, or repair the underlying glass, they are very difficult to completely remove. Silicone residue causes paint to "fish-eye".
From John Dunsmoor:
Do not use any product that contains either Teflon or silicone; most of these [non-traditional] products do. If you get either of these compounds on the topside, paint will not stick, neither will gelcoat.
If you want to use these kinds of products make sure you have completed your painting repair cycle.

seems reading this website silicone sealers are mentioned quite a lot and the words leaks more
this link show a repair to the fibreglass
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
general advice on fibre glass care but no info regarding not using silicone
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
seems there is a lots of info about detailing, but dont have time to read it all
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
to round up the info above, if you intend to repair at any time don't use silicone products, it will make life a touch difficult..

Yes ! Having worked in a Business, part of which had a 'Body Shop" - silicone polishing sprays, tyre polish spray etc was a "NO" "NO" anywhere near the "Paint Shop" ! ! As mentioned above it causes severe paint problems - causing amongst other problems "fish eye" in the finish ! With little chance of getting rid of it (although an 'anti fish-eye' additive was available to add to the paint, but not vey satisfactory , if I remember correctly !)
So KEEP SILICONE SPRAYS etc off any areas likely to need re finishing :)

I use farecla marine professional
surface restorer
ultimate uv wax polish
most boats seem to be made of fibreglass, or grp, watching many you tubes regarding boat detailing lead to the muscle aching yellow bottles,
my main aim was to use a product for fibre glass and grp, that could afford and was available in the uk
using is hard work on muscles, but does give results perhaps a machine may help
there is another product called 3m marine restorer and wax, but for me the warnings covered most of the rear of the bottle, and when fully health and safety clothed ,to ensure all warnings covered found struggled to move arms and see to use product it does give a result,
all products mentioned can be used with a machine, or by hand
this website seems to promote farecla
I finished with meguiars gold class carnauba plus to prolong the finish, cant say whether silicone is in this or not
wax restorer, seems to have good reviews, but no ingredients
will let you do your own research to the ingredients

P

I use Harly wax and also Collinite both are Carnauba waxes, I was initially told about using silicon on the roof parts by Mark at Lechlade, I even made a rough note on our original paperwork.
Farcela and Meguiars are really good waxes / polishes and again I've used both before, all these Harly, Collinite, Farcel, Meguiars are trade names and they make many different waxes / polishes the choice is yours.
If your roof is dull, then I would suggest you cut it back carefully before, polishing and then waxing, to prolong your hard work build up the layers of wax, which is what I do
Likes to wax and have a smooth finish!
It's a conspiracy, I tell you!

OK, so does Silicone degrade after a period of time. The reason I ask is that I have used Isabella Aquatex to lubricate the awining rail in the past which of course makes sliding the awning into the rail a real doddle. However, whilst spraying into the awning channel it's sods law that some of the spray will have encroached onto the roof area and dried on of course. So the question is, will continued exposure to rain and sun etc eventually degrade any Silicone that will have dried on the roof area?
