Opinions on an AL used Troll

My eye has been caught by an '05 Troll 552 on AL's site, listed at £14,499.

Apart from the layout it's identical to our '05 Troll 540 we parted with in 2013.

I've checked with AL and they say that it has a Truma Therme boiler installed, which isn't listed on their ad. It certainly has external cold fill, witness the flap below the washroom window by the front of the nearside wheel arch.

I also queried the fixed bed size and they say it's 1.97m x 1.37m. The 1.97m surprised me as I thought I recalled all pre-2010 Trolls were only 2.0m wide externally and therefore can't be 1.97m internally. Then I recalled a vague memory that the 55X layouts were on a wider 2.1m body, which would explain the extra bed length. If that's correct it makes the bed 6ft 5.4ins long and even longer than my current 6ft 4ins in the wobbly Rimini.

AL also say the MTPLM of the 552 is 1200kg, which would be ideal for our Yeti, though I harbour a suspicion that the wider 55X vans were 1300kg as standard, but maybe I got that wrong? Certainly I'd like to know the MIRO for an '05 552, because this van has a fair few cost options on it that must use up a fair bit of payload.

So any help on my uncertainties welcome as are any opinions on price, value, suitability, provenance etc, etc.

Thanks in anticipation.

Truma Therme is the electric hot water provider. The taps in kitchen sink and washroom look like cold only. Am I looking at the right one?

The attached 2006 eriba brochure may help.
55 series vans were 2.1m wide and standard axle on that year was 1200kg.
Large on-board tank was fitted under the seating in the centre of the van and the Truma-therme was under the bed, about shoulder position of the nearest rear bed occupant to the center of the van. At least that's were they were on my 2007 552. The Switch for this was usually just to the right of the internal underbed hatch, but I note on the AL van none is present.
Be warned, the centre dining area does not make a full length bed.
The curved cabinet is well placed for a TV if you are in bed or sitting at the centre dining area.
The hatch behind the loo accesses a deceptively large storage area.
The van shown has an two underbed outside hatches, I believe the one on the opposite side to the entrance door was an extra.

Thanks for that Colin, looking at the van in question it looks as if it's got about 100kg of options fitted so the MIRO would be good to know so I'd know roughly how much available payload it has.

I'd spotted that the dinette bed was shorter, which wouldn't be a problem for us as it would only occasionally be used by grandson who's 8 years old and quite short for his age.

Good to know where the boiler should be and what that switch, which I'd seen on others, is for. Was the water tank a standard fit though? Weren't they an option and you could have Aquaroll feed from outside instead if you didn't have the tank. I'd assumed that the external feed being into the washroom cupboard meant there was no tank, like both our 540's, but I guess if the tank's where you say, it would be just the other side of a partition.

On reflection there is one prob with the 552. Mrs SDA often stays up later than me and I get up earlier than her. It might be better if there was some furniture between bed and dinette, so we wouldn't disturb each other. Maybe a 550?

The £14249 one has cold only taps Tony. The £14,499 has a hint of red on the kitchen tap in one of the pics.

Our first 540 had no hot water, but your old one had a Therme, thank goodness.

We have an 05, 552 which had an MTPLM 1200k when we bought it but have had it uprated by Hymer to 1300k, and yes it is a 2.1 wide body, we also removed the sprung mattress and fitted a new reflex foam one, saved about 7k from memory and is far more comfortable. MIRO for an 06 was 960k. unladen weight was 930k. payload allowance 240k/340kif uprated

Many thanks Dave.

So that's 960kg ish plus 100kg ish equals about 1060kg ish. That means about 140kg available payload, which is the standard 2 berth payload on a UK white wobbly. Though you'd then have to take off about 20kg for the battery, whereas it's already accounted for in the Eribas Autonomy pack. With a, say, 30kg mover to account for as well, the 552 would have about 110kg available to pack, whereas a UK 2 berth would have just 90kg left. Fair makes you wonder where the initial 240kg payload all went..
