For newcomers to caravanning - Pre-departure Checklist

If you have never towed a caravan before you may be a little overwhelmed by all the things you have to do before setting off so as to avoid possible disaster on the road. I certainly was and over the years I reckon I've made all the common daft mistakes (driving off with the steadies down, with the mover rollers still on the tyres, jockey wheel down etc) and I'm still working on discovering new ones. We all do it.

Some time ago I printed out a checklist/aide-memoire that I now run through before setting off on a journey and on more than one occasion it has saved me from making even more of a fool of myself. I keep my list in a clear plastic folder in the caravan door pocket but I really ought to have it laminated for durability.

Anyway, here once again is the Word file for you to download, modify and use should you so wish.

Please note that the list is tailored to my own caravan and personal circumstances so not all of the checks will necessarily apply to your outfit. Please feel free to delete and add items as required.

With a few variations based on silly experiences - laminated with clipboard - but it does work....

One thing I remember from the CC towing course was the instructors insistence that the breakaway cable is the first thing to be attached, before the hitch itself or electrics. The theory apparently I'd that once the breakaway is attached any unwanted rearward movement by the van during hitching would apply the brakes.

This is brilliant. I made my own list ready for my maiden voyage this weekend but I forgot half the items you list!

Thank you.

Thanks Aaron - it is a more comprehensive list than ours. Already printing to be passed on to Kath ready for next trip.

Last year some friends of ours with a small van but not an Eriba saw their caravan draw alongside them as they turned in leaving a site. Fortunately it rolled gently into some plastic bins. Geoff's dignity was damaged more than the deep scratches in the van. Nothing like it happening to someone you know to double your vigilance! MikeT

At bullet point no.18 my CC club instructor suggests using the jockey wheel to lift the van thus checking that the van is actually locked on the tow ball. If it’s locked on, the van and car rise together, if it’s not locked on only the van rises.

Yes, that's the standard way of checking.

My pleasure. Every time I read my list, I think that the order in which I listed the checks could be more logically presented but I never seem to get around to doing anything about it.

The common cock-ups I (and I'm sure many others on here) have made are:

1. Driving off with the jockey wheel down or inadequately secured so it drops down while towing.
2. Driving off with the mover rollers still on the tyres or the handbrake engaged.
3. Not fully securing the pop top
4. Not adjusting the towball stabiliser etc etc.

When I was getting ready to leave St Neots last month, the guy on the pitch next to me drove off with his electrical hook-up lead still attached to his van and connected.

We all do stupid things from time to time but the list should help avoid the worst dickheadery.

Have a great holiday!

The thing to try and do is get into a set routine then you are less likely to miss something, but its not unfortunately impossible,
I haven't done the electrical hook-up one yet but most of the others I've committed.

But for the list, which I now have stored in my phone memos ( hows that for 21st. century! ) I have almost: Driven off with the step pulled out .. and with a window open.. and forgot to plug into the car.
Before I used the list I saw the wardrobe press swinging away in the rear view mirror .. luckily no damage and I towed a couple of gallons of drinking water a couple of hundred Km. Thankfully no spills !
Familiarity etc. its handy just to run through the list, especially if like me within 5 minutes driving you are out onto a motorway. Stopping to double check is a bad idea at that stage.
