Towing mirrors

Just seen that the fine has gone up for not using towing mirrors.
I can see both rear corners of my van using the standard mirrors on the Jeep.
Always assumed that this was legal,...Anyone clarify, please,...Chris

A set of mirrors helps to not attract VOSA spot check attention, for the £30 or £40
they cost, well worth while.

It is simply just not true that it is illegal to tow without mirrors but the intricacies of the legal requirements may be beyond explanation at the side of the road!
So to avoid the situation arising it maybe best just to wear a pair!

We find the mirrors irritating but rather than being pulled over we put up with the dam things.

This is one of those topics that gets debated ad nauseum on CT, with some people getting quite worked up about it. I subscribe to the 'don't tempt the Bobby' policy as mentioned by Tony.

+1 Towing a small Puck L I too find them more of a nuisance than any help - but better than the inconvenience of being 'pulled' by the "force" and trying (probably without success) to explain that you ARE actually technically correct in not needing them

I think the rule of thumb is your towing vehicles widest part must be wider than the caravan.
I think it is preferable to use the mirrors than argue technicalities with les flics on a drizzly morning
when you really want to be somewhere else.

As my Multipla is wider than my PuckL I technically don't need mirrors. However I appreciate that trying to explain this to the boys in blue or les Gendarmes could be tricky. That said I have tried numerous mirrors and can't find any to fit the rather odd and large mirrors that are on the Multipla. Does anyone know of any that could fit?
Julie.

So that's why so many manufacturers sell cheap mirrors that shake like I do after 24 hours without a drink, ..they know we'll buy a cheap pair to ward of Plod and use the car's mirrors anyway?

All this talk about towing mirrors is worrying me, I haven't got any and just to check I emailed Milenco to ask if any would fit my car. Sent them a photo so they could see the mirrors on it. They said there weren't any that would work. They did say they loved my car though!

Is this a rule that is relative to age of towing vehicle?

Drove the Mini and the Puck yesterday for the first time this year and you guys have made me paranoid about being stopped for wrong mirrors... Typically I got stuck in a traffic jam where there had been a diversion with a police road block and lots of policemen and police cars parked up right next to me.... They just waved and smiled at me with the Mini and Puck.

I can see either side of the Puck with my mirrors, I can see anybody overtaking or coming through on the inside lane. But not anybody right behind me. Hmmm.

can you post a picture of mirrors on mini, perhaps someone has seen something which might fit.
other wise pop off to local caravan place and try them all

another plus to mirrors is getting through a tight gate way if the mirrors get through hopefully the eriba will, depending on angles potholes and the like...
