Campsite near Santander

Hi All.

We are embarking on our first European tour with our puck at the end of July, to see friends in the south of France. We will be getting the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander and driving from there.

I have driven in France before, but never towing and am a little nervous! The ferry however doesn't get in until 6.30pm and I do not want to embark on a long drive straight off the ferry at night!

Does anyone know of a campsite in easy reach of Santander that will do for a quick overnight stop so we can start the long drive suitably refreshed?

Thanks

Ralph

Hi, Cant advise a site but the towing in France is a lot easier than the UK, so dont worry,if you can cope with the UK everything else will be easy, have a good trip

Hi,
I can only recommend Camping Islares, 37 miles East of Santander towards Bilbao, near a town called Castro Urdiales, right on the coast, huge beach, all the facilities and a lovely little restaurant on site. There are two sites shown on the ACSI map closer to Santander , I would trust most of the ACSI sites, depending on when you are going you can save money offseason with their discount card, recouping the cost of the card in a few nights.

Hi Ralph.
Santander is one of the loveliest ports to disembark from. Remember to stay on deck until the last moments because the ferry takes about 30 minutes to finally get to dock and before that you are crusing past the sheltered beaches and houses of the city in the ria.

You disembark straight onto a roundabout in the city and follow the signs and other travellers along a long street and out onto a dual carrageway.

If you are heading toward France, about 30 minutes down the motorway is the town of Laredo. Camping Laredo is quite a big campsite not that far off the motorway but it has excellent facilities for a one nighter or a bit longer. I imagine they stay open well into the evening to accept ferry customers. Email or ring them and ask.

Apart from that we don't know of any ones closer although I'd be surprised if there aren't any.

Thanks for your helpful replies and for the useful tips Randa! Camping Loredo looks good, I will get in touch with them.

I have just been on the internet ordering GB stickers, headlamp converters and spare bulb kits.....didn't bother with the breathalysers....just need to sort the inflatable awning....it's all go this caravanning lark!
