Daft question alert? Fridge power on a ferry

We're on the morning ferry to Santander tomorrow. If the fridge is on 'tow mode' and of course the car ignition will be off, what will happen to the fridge during the 30 hour crossing? Just thinking about ice cubes in the freezer, rather than what's chilling in the fridge itself.
Cheers.

It all depends on the ambient temperatures and the efficiency of your fridge's insulation as there will be no refrigeration taking place for the whole of the lengthy crossing.
We keep all our cold stuff in the domestic fridge/freezer until just before departure so it is as cold as possible when we set off from home.
Have you thought of freezing a couple of those blocks that tent campers use and putting them in the bottom of the fridge?
When the fridge in our old VW camper went tits up, the first we knew about it was when we opened the door and the butter ran out and pooled on the van floor.

Unless you can run the fridge on gas, which I doubt will be allowed to, then you cannot leave anything perishable in the caravan fridge for that period of time. I'm also unaware of hook up options onboard although an advance call may be worthwhile as the ship must be carrying refrigerated lorries.
We carry a table top freezer in the boot and that drops from -21 to -9 when unplugged over an 18.+ hour period. The caravan fridge does not have the same level of insulation so even assuming a 5c start then you don't really have a hope.

The freezer pack idea that Brian mentions will help but our advice is to not load too much in the fridge and stock up when you get there. It's cheaper anyway :-) There's a number of supermarkets in Laredo if that's where you intend staying and they have large car parks that'll fit the car and the Eriba.

Thanks all. Advise noted. The only perishables are our ferry food, which we'll take up to our cabin. Looking forward to the Spanish fruit, veg, wine, cheese etc. so not taking it from the UK. I'll empty the ice cube tray and make ice when on sites in Jaca and La Fresneda.

We use to only pack full with frozen goods, even Gin or Vodka in re-used water bottles ( Always a refreshing shock in the morning if you forget to label) then have part bake or flat breads (tortillas) make a great omelette roll with onions, chilli etc before 1st shop on landing

Connected to very poor WiFi aboard Brittany Ferries Baie De Seine (i'm not complaining by the way). On this ship, which sails under the 'Economie' brand, the caravans, motorhomes, vans etc. are parked on the open deck, and the majority of yesterday was blue skies, full sun and good temps. The Eriba was most likely pretty warm inside, so no chance of the fridge remaining cool for very long after I switched off the ignition.

Yes, our alarm went off. The beauty of being on the open deck is that you can unlock/lock the car from the sun deck, glass of wine in hand.

With most VW group cars you should be able to disable the alarm. Look for a button on the 'B' post behind the drivers seat. Press the button, shut the doors and lock the car. The alarm is automatically reinstated when you unlock the car again.
