Insurance (again!) - not towing

I'm sorry to raise this horny old subject yet again, but I have searched on the forum for up to date info on the responsiveness of insurance companies (not the level of quotes as I appreciate these can be so personal) and unless I'm doing something wrong, or missing something, I can't find anything recent. I know from experience these things change on a regular basis.

It's difficult to get much useful info on the review sites - the "good" insurance companies invariably have excellent processes tor quoting and taking your money which swamp the few disgruntled customers who have to claim.

Also caravan insurance seems to be specialised.

I'm particularly concerned about how companies respond to claims - I would be prepared to pay more for peace of mind that a company will treat me fairly and quickly.

I'd be interested to hear from members who have had good AND bad experiences in claiming over the last year or so, or have heard of such experiences from others.

Thank you!

Sorry, should make it clear when I say "not towing" I mean not breakdown insurance!

I posted this "somewhere else" a few years ago:-
"........ The father of a 6th form student who I teach runs a recovery vehicle, collecting Red Pennant vehicles from abroad and damaged vehicles in the UK. The mother deals with the yard and paperwork side of the business. I have been told Towergate are one of the "least helpful" to deal with. Caravanguard, Lifesure, SAGA are all OK, but the Caravan Club stands out as being very good. No surprise when you consider the premiums."

After an accident in Italy I can vouch for SAGA on quick response, and no real quibble on the amount paid.

The last three posts above leave me a little confused so can you enlighten me please?

I assume we are talking about breakdowns, damage and/or traffic accidents abroad?

When we travel abroad our Eriba is insured with Saga but we also take out Red Pennant Insurance. We assume that if we have a vehicle breakdown (car or van) we call Red Pennant but who do we call if we have a traffic accident?

I'd call both and aske them how to proceed. I think I would call Red Pennant first as they could get things rolling more quickly to clear the vehicles to a safe place.

I rang the RAC but by the time they answered, "your call is important to us", the German police had organised the recovery. After the event the RAC told me I should have rung Saga as it was an accident not a breakdown and therefore up to the insurance company. When you've just had a real shock it is hard to think clearly. My advice for what it's worth is ring everyone.
