BIP again

Advice please. I have a 1994 Triton fitted with the French BIP power supply / distribution box. The mains input side has been upgraded by replacing the main switch with an RCD, the 12 volt transformer is delivering 17 volts and will need replacing.

The van has no battery at the moment but I may decide to fit one in the future.

On looking for a suitable replacement 12 volt supply I find some are advertised as "Power Supply & Battery Charger" and some "Battery Charger" not sure what the difference is. I would appreciate any advice, also 10 amp or 20 amp.

So far as I understand it (and I'm always open to correction on matters electrical), the BIP unit incorporates a transformer to convert 220/240V AC to 12V DC so if you remove the transformer you will lose both your 12V supply to lights, fridge when towing, heater fan (if fitted) and taps as well as having no means of recharging your leisure battery.

What you need then is an alternative unit that will act as a charger and also provide a 12V supply. A battery charger will do only the former.

If you haven't already seen it, THIS link should be of interest.

If all you want to do is replace the transformer, I have one that you can have for the price of postage.

If in doubt, ask JohnE who understands these matters.

Thanks Aron, yes I have read your link, it is pretty much what I want to achieve, the link to the "Amperor power supply doesn't work now though but I will need something similar.

The problem is I am reading 17 volts output from the 12 volt supply to lights e.t.c. The van has no battery at the moment and I don't really need one but may decide to fit one in the future.

I intend to keep using the casing of the BIP unit also the 230 volt input side with it's new RCD and MCB breakers and the 12 volt fuses and distribution board, bypassing the transformer / rectifier circuit with a new power supply mounted externally to the BIP unit.

Regards Eric

It would be very much simpler to fit a 12V battery in to your system. The battery does all the smoothing that you require and you can then replace the BIP's transformer with a relatively cheap and simple battery charger like the CTek, still keeping the rest of the BIP for mains and 12V distribution.
