Turning 3 berth familia 310 into a 4 berth

My husband and I are looking at buying an eriba and have decided we think the familia 310 is the best to go for at the moment (cost, size, as we have never towed before, and we have two children 2.5 and 5 yrs old). We think the best sleeping arrangement would be 5 yr old on single berth, me and 2.5 yr old on double berth and husband on air mat on the floor with his legs extending under the double berth. In warmer weather I think some of us would sleep in the waning. Does this sound like a preposterous idea? Any thoughts/experience greatly appreciated.

I've owned a 310 and I don't think your plans would work. You will not have enough room to sleep on a cold floor. Best advice would be a purpose made bunk for the front. In a few years time your eldest should by then be up for a pup tent. Ours went into these from 8 or 9 and they loved it.

Thanks Colin. I’m not sure if my 5 year old’s ready for sleeping in a bunk yet - she still falls out of bed. May have to think it over, unless my husband wants to sleep in a bunk 😉.

I'm trying to work out what you'd do if someone needed a pee in the night, you'd all be up.

If you get a larger 540 the bed is so huge you could easily sleep three across the van on the double (king size at least) and one in the front bed..

Triton 418 is a genuine 4 berth - fairly rare in the UK popular on the continent. Not much heavier than a 310 as they do not have an onboard toilet cubicle.

Usual places are eBay, gumtree, preloved and Dom Fox in Norfolk.

Whilst not as big as the 540 bed we've slept 5 in our 530. 3 children aged 9,10 and 11 while we slept in the front dinette/bed. That front bed is only a large single really and a bit of a squeeze for 2 adults but the 3 kids were happy as the proverbial bugs in the big bed. If the 5 year old is prone to falling out what about a bed guard, I'm sure that would anchor under the cushions that make up the bed just the same as under the mattress on a normal bed. Then they could have the front bed and the 2 adults could share the bigger bed with the toddler. Won't make for the most romantic of sleeps but with kids ......

With a 530 you could easily sleep the 2.5 and 5 yr old at the front and the two adults in the rear

If they're anything like our lot were sharing a bed is a complete nightmare. The worst complaint ever by big sister of younger sister was "she's breathing on me". I did point out that whilst I could stop some things, a toddlers breathing was not one of them.

Ours were fine, and with two you could top to toe, all depends on how they get on now
