What is this and what did it do ? It lives in the cupboard by the sink and I assumed it was to turn the gas on and off. HOWEVER, having had a Bullfinch outside gas connection fitted, it became obvious that it was something else ! Pipework done, lit the gas rings on the cooker and as soon as the bullfinch plug was inserted and turned on, the gas went off !

The offending item has been removed and a straight piece of pipe has replaced it.

It looks like an anti-rupture / crash-protection device; if too much gas passes through it (for example, if the pipe is ruptured) then it shuts off the flow. I imagine that when you have both the gas hob on and Bullfinch connected you are exceeding the flow limit. However, it seems difficult to believe the true flow is more than 2.6kg/hour therefore the device may be faulty. New vans have a similar but smaller device fitted directly as part of the flexible hose at the gas cylinder.

My gas bottle has a blue regulator. This also acted as a regulator of sorts and although I could run the fridge and gas rings together, when I lit the gas rings and plugged in the bullfinch connection, all gas flow ceased. We also tried the bullfinch on its own, having first confirmed that gas was at the gas rings, turned the rings off and when we opened the flow to the bullfinch ...there was nothing !

As I previously said, it could be that when you plug in the Bullfinch connector there is a sudden rush of gas into the empty pipe; this may be enough to trigger the anti-rupture device. Can you reset the device AFTER connecting the Bullfinch to see if it then works ok? Failing that, I would PM John England as he's the expert on these matters...

The new pipe that has been put in its approximately 3 feet of 8 mm copper. I can’t see that that extra piece of tubing would trip unless with the feed for the cooker and the fridge it’s almost on the limit and ready to trip. Even if we turned off the supply to the cooker and the fridge the minute I plugged in the adapter outside there was no gas coming through at all. So I made an executive decision and we removed it. I won’t be using the indoor cooker and the outdoor cooker at the same time, it will be at an either or situation. The date on the object was 10/89, so on safety grounds I felt it needed to be removed. I will see if I can sneak a look next week at the newer version and then make enquiries.

Its a secondary gas regulator (1st one in the gas locker). We have one in our Pan Fam. Its basically the second line of defense before the red valve thermo couples supply each appliance.
