Help with battery charger

Whilst on a site and connected to electric last weekend, the battery was found to be over charging. There was a strange smell, heat from under the seat and the volt meter was reading 16. Turned the charger off. Battery seems to be still working fine-does anyone know what could be wrong?

When this happened to me I ended up having to buy a new battery.
