Seat Leon 2010 1.9 diesel + troll 540

Hello everybody! We currently have aspirations to join the eriba family with the purchase of a troll 540 for me, my wife and 2 young kids. I'm concerned about towing so have just entered the weights in a website and my leon would be within 85% weighted fairly comfortably, but having never towed befire, it is close.

My dilemma is, if we need to buy a new car this puts the caravan purchase back by a year but also want to be safe with my young family and drive within my ability. As experienced towers/eriba owners, does anyone have any advice? Also are newer trolls noticeably easier to two than the older ones?

Welcome, the 85% rule is a good guide but not gospel. If towing a big white wobbly box [normal caravan] then I would take the ratios more seriously.
The 1.9 diesel in your Leon is the same lump as I had in a VW Touran, but I'm guessing you are more likely to have 140bhp as opposed to the 100bhp I had. This towed a 1300kg Troll slowly but with no stability issues. The 110bhp diesel in my Yeti did a similar job. Weight and bhp/torque should not be a problem so good news in that you should be fine with your present car for the immediate future.
Most post 2001 [approx] UK Trolls will be 1200kg. Easy way to check is count the wheel studs. 5 = 1200, possibly even 1300kg, whilst 4 = 1000kg. These newer Trolls aren't any easier or more difficult to tow, but make sure they have the Alko or Winterhoff anti-snake stabiliser hitch. These were standard on UK models.

A Troll 540 is only 3-berth as you no doubt know, but a 530 might be better for two adults and put your two small children in the front single (which is much wider than the single in the 540)?

Thank you very much, this good to hear!

I have horror visions of snaking all over the motorway but there is a fairly hefty engine in the old seat leon, so feel like we should be ok if we take it steady.

Thanks - you're not the first person to suggest this, we are just keen to be able to have some sort of lounge area for a rainy day. Looks like maybe the 535 has similar proportions without the permanent bed(?), that would be ideal for us.

Thanks Dave, this is super-helpful. The 550 layout looks clever as the heater is in front of the 'lounge/diner' which makes alot of sense to me. Didn't realise there was a 530 fixed bed vs 530 not fixed bed either. Every day is a shoold day. Think maybe, either of these would be good although the wife likes the long seats of the 540 so may have to work on that. We have 2 boys, eldest of which loves to 'explore' his bed and various sleeping positions throughout the night, so a bit of room might be good!
