Glad this didn't happen when towing

Got home after a drive out in the car and noticed a puddle of oil. Checked oil and way below minimum. This was fine a couple of weeks ago when I last checked it but the level was almost off the dipstick. The garage cant look at it until next week so decided to dismantle the various covers underneath to have a look. The oil filter had come loose and oil everywhere.

I have never heard of a filter coming loose. Usually the opposite is the case, where you cant get the damn thing off.

I didn't get any warnings even though the car warns you of everything (its frosty, nobody is in the back seat, you phone has connected). A warning like "you haven't got any engine oil and are about to seize up" would be useful!

Anyway have refilled and all seems ok but I am glad it didn't happen whilst I was out towing. Guess who will be checking his oil every day from now on.

In the good old days of the Ford Granada or Austin 1800, it was the done thing to kick the tyres and look under the bonnet before every trip.

Now in the age of bomb proof cars I find that I've become a bit lax but I do notice when out and about I still perform the ritual far more often than others. I still get laughed at for going around the car and checking that all the doors are locked after the central locking has done its job and then waiting for the flashing red car alarm signal to activate.

The leaking oil from my Morris Minor Traveller is the best anti-rust protection there is!

As Randa says we are being conditioned into not checking these things these days.

Have to say it's the first time I have had to top up oil in any car in nearly 20 years (or even buy any oil for that matter). Maybe I have just been lucky so far.

I carry a litre pack of the correct oil. Only had to use it once when the car flashed up mega warning signs of low oil. A check on the dipstick confirmed very little oil in the engine.............a week after an expensive main dealer service
