Manual or Automatic

I have a simple question. What are your thoughts on which is best for towing. A manual gearbox or an automatic. I know it may come down to a personal preference in the end but interesting to hear your views non the less.

I bought a Volvo V70 a few years ago. It was my first automatic. It has been a revelation, particularly when towing. I would not go back..

Very happy with a VW Tiguan automatic. I enjoy driving and prefer a manual gearbox normally but the automatic takes all the potential stress out of towing. Still not something Mrs C fancies trying though!

Hmm. Interesting. Auto 2 Manual 0. The reason I ask is that I am part exchanging my 1.2 TSI Auto Petrol Yeti for a 2.0 TDI 4x4 Manual Yeti ( more grunt )
The DSG box on my 1.2 petrol Yeti is lovely but I actually enjoy changing gears as well.

I thought the general consensus was that auto boxes are now the better choice. I seem to recall reading they are also stronger.
When I changed from my 2.0L diesel 110bhp manual Yeti I looked at an auto, but the extra £1000 dissuaded me and I stuck with manual, but I must say that I'm happy with my choice.
As an aside, I moved to a 1.5L petrol Audi A3 which pulls my Triton better than the Yeti. Yes t it does have 40bhp more but the all important torque is the same.

Not even crossed my mind that manual or auto would make any difference to the towing. I like manuals but the world seems to be going auto - I would not over think it.

We have used an auto ever since we bought our 1st Eriba [10 years] Bunny says its much better, especially on some of the mountain roads.

Well, if you like your DSG box and you also like changing gears then you would enjoy either/both - we have a DSG box with the steering wheel ‘paddles’ which I never use but one could, no doubt, to get a semi-automatic.

I cannot think of anything worse for the left ankle and knee than to be stuck in very slow moving traffic and having to work the clutch all the time - I had to sell a beloved manual car a couple of years ago due to the gip I was getting in my left knee even from normal driving so you might consider the state of the joints in your left leg before making a final decision

I'm happy with manual but guess that towing is easier with auto. However, I drive more miles solo so stick to manual.

Have previously towed since the 90's using manual cars but on my last change opted for KIa Sorento Auto. Would not go back even though MPG is higher.

You will find with some modern autos that they are more efficient than the manual equivalent. This cought my attention on the Audi before the £1000 premium.
