We took the continental approach and went for 2/3 man pup tents, the Quechua from Decathlon. From about 10 our boys loved them. They had their own space, could be left to fester until mid-day, setting up and packing away was quicker, cost was less than a big awning or annexes and when they decided no longer to come with us they could use the tents if they wanted for solo camping.
You will find the Kampa with its footprint of 3.4 x 2.5 m perfect for two to spread out or a family to use for meals if it's wet and still give some storage space.
