Back in another Eriba - this time a 1995 Puck

Well, I'm back - these little caravans do have a way of getting under your skin. I bought another Eriba - this one is #3 - a 1995 Eriba Puck that I purchased from Anthony Lloyd somewhere up in the north of England. I previously had a 1989 Puck and a 1988 Triton. Early last year (2019) I sold the Triton and went for a bigger fiberglass Escape 17' caravan built in Canada. I bought it sight unseen and almost as soon as I got it home I realized it was just too big and too complicated for the style of camping I'm used to... (shouldn't have sold that Triton - it was a really nice example). I got serious about selling the Escape this past January and by February it was sold and I was on the hunt for another Eriba. Here's where it gets complicated - I live in the southeastern USA (Georgia) and Eribas are very rare over here and expensive when you do find one. I've been watching Eribas on the internet and after seeing a few for very reasonable prices (compared to prices on this side of the pond) - I saw this 1995 Puck on Anthony Lloyd's website. I contacted him and I can't praise him enough - he sent me detailed photos, was thoroughly pleasant and professional to deal with and even volunteered to tow the Puck down to the Port of Southampton for embarkation on a ship to Brunswick, GA. I reimbursed him for the expenses of course. I can highly recommend him.

Importing the Puck to the USA was pretty easy shipping and customs costs were around $2,000 and I picked it up at the port just before the Covid shutdown in early March. I've been working on it since then, rewiring it for 110V, upgrading a few things and putting some 2" square steel tube spacers between the axle and frame to raise it for a little more ground clearance. Iwas extremely pleased with my purchase - Anthony did a great job describing it and I'm convinced I now have one of the best Eribas on this side of the Atlantic.

Its now ready to go camping sometime this fall - looking forward very much to our first outing in the next month or so. The most frustrating thing I had to deal with during the whole process was finding someone who would ship a pair of new wheels to the USA. The Germans absolutely wouldn't ship out of the EU and some of the vendors over there just didn't want to. The old ones were a little timeworn and I wanted to put new wheels and tires on the Puck. I buy a lot of Land Rover Parts from the UK and is just never an issue - DHL delivers stuff to my home on a regular basis. I 'm having the same problem with a cover for the Puck - outrageous shipping charges for posting a cover to our side of teh ocean when it should cost around 30 GBP!

Welcome and nice to hear a plan working out. I must admit the 2" lift does look good. It suits the Puck, an Eriba that I have always thought just looks to low.

Your Puck looks great, I agree with Colin regarding the increased height.

PS The breakaway chain is a significant bit of kit - is this a requirement in USA or your own choice?

Breakaway chains are required over here and the ones that were on the trailer were about three inches too short so I upgraded. I've had a trailer come off the hitch before so I sort of went overboard and went up to 5/16 diameter chain links - it just looks bigger in the photos. I own four Land Rovers - two old Series IIA's, the Defender 90 300Tdi and a Discovery 5 TDV6. I'll be getting a new Defender 110 next month with the P300 four cylinder engine so that was another reason to downsize my travel trailer. The 17' Escape was too heavy for the Defender to tow comfortably although the Discovery with its big V-6 diesel worked really well. I've had the new Defender on order since last fall so I knew I'd have to get something lighter anyway.

I really like how the spacers worked out - the 135R13 tires that are standard on the Pucks are not easily available in the USA anymore and I wanted to go to the more common 175R13 size tire but they are 2" larger in diameter than the original equipment tire so I had to put the spacers in for clearance in the wheel wells. I've attached a picture of the spacers I made out of 2" square steel tubing with a .250 " wall thickness. They are about 12" long.

Here's a shot of my 1988 Triton at a Land Rover event in North Carolina in 2018 - it lives in Florida now.

The Puck's first outing on this side of the Atlantic will probably be a Land Rover camping event in western Virginia during the first weekend of October. So I will be able to combine my passions of Land Rovers, Eriba campers and old friends in one long four day weekend.
