Microsoft Office 2010 alternative

I run the 2010 version that is now no longer supported with updates etc. This doesn't worry me but I'm starting to get problems opening documents. I know I can pay an arm and a leg to run the latest 365 version but I don't want to.
What free compatible software is available that others use. I just want word processing. I don't run Excel but do have a few old Publisher documents I would like to still access.

Its an established free alternative. You will hardly notice any difference. It may load a little slower on old machines. I've used it for years.

I use Libra as an alternative to Office on my laptop and Tablet. It's very similar to Office. I don't think Microsoft likes it however because it sometimes refuses to read it or print it. Mrs R has Microsoft on her laptop. I'm still using Windows XP on my Notebook.

It would appear I'm in look. I've managed to open, convert, edit, re-save and print existing documents in Word.

Mike, will do, just remind me.
I had a couple of Word Documents I was working on for 2021 trips abroad. These do take a couple of seconds longer to open than if in MS Office [before recent blips], but the text looks the same and if anything the menu bar across the top looks more detailed, with far more bits than I'll ever use. Typefaces etc are all the same. I did experience one glitch on printing, but I think that was down to me.
I opened a mainly text Publisher document in Libre Office Draw and it looked fine with the exception of some borders. I've just tried opening some very large documents that are image based and it is not working as hoped.
Conclusion, for text I'm going to stick with it.

I've been using Open Office for years as I'm a Linux User.
One tip I would give is to save documents as .doc or .docx so that other Microsoft users can open them.
Last time I looked, Microsoft Word couldn't open a .ODF file.

LibreOffice is jut the editor. It can edit .ODF files which are open source versions of word/excel etc.

When you say you have converted I think you mean you have saved your existing Microsoft files in this format.
Libreoffice can also edit and save files in your Microsoft formats if you wanted to.
(later) Microsoft word can also edit .odt files
.docx superseded the .doc format and is more efficient has more features.
“saving as” a different format can loose features as ODF files do not support all Microsoft formatting.
Also LibreOffice has superseded OpenOffice

Libre Office is superb and I use it all the time. I used it's predecessor Open office since about 2002 when I vowed I would never have another Microsft operating system as my main. Like Ray (post #10) I am a Linux user.
