Sealing waistrail

We have just resealed (hopefully) the waistline trim on our 06 Triton but will do it again during the winter. I have just read on another forum that it is recommended that the white plastic gasket under the aluminium is not refitted and the rail bonded directly to the sidewall. This is said to reduce leak potential and makes sense.
Any thoughts or experience of this is welcome.

No experience but I would ask why it's there if it's not needed. Also the aluminium trim would need replacing as it will no longer fit.

Can you disclose the other forum, it sounds interesting.

The upper outer aluminium skin overlaps the lower skin by at least 20mm, and it's this overlap that is sealed, not the waist rail.

Theres no reason to bond the rail directly to the body - it's fixed with screws and the gasket is fitted to provide a cushioned interface between the two surfaces.

Are you resealing (twice?) to cure a damp problem?

The other forum was found via Google and in fairness referred to wobbly box vans. It seems that they no longer use the gasket due to increased potential for leaks via the screws holding the moulding. This makes some sense as with the gasket you need to seal it to the body, then you need to seal the moulding to the gasket. Eliminate the gasket and you only need to seal the moulding to the body.
Just found the forum in question, read from 8:41pm

I had never heard this before but it does make sense.
Resealed quickly to stop a leak. Seems to have worked but want to do a more through job when the van is stored under cove at the end of the season.
