I made the move from the same 2.0L diesel in my Yeti to the 1.5 petrol you are considering in my Audi A3. It is an excellent engine and tows my 1200kg Triton with ease. Economy towing at 50/55mph is a diesel like 37/38mpg on a good motorway run.

Mine is a 2019, 35 tfsi, 150bhp with 250N/m torque. I previously had 2.0L 110bhp diesel Touran from 2004 to 2014, then same engine in 2014 Yeti for 5 years. All have towed well but the petrol in my Audi is without doubt the best engine so far. Yes it does have greater bhp, but it is the torque figure that is important in towing, which is the same as previous diesels.
I must admit that my Touran was probably the best family car I have owned and if I needed space I would be looking for one. If you fall into this position I would advise you put it on your list as it shares the same petrol engine. If not then the Golf or Octavia are contenders, both with the same 1.5 petrol.

The only thing I'd query is making that boy's shirt from the table cloth. Another satisfied VAG 1.5 petrol user, in a Skoda Karoq. Excellent if you get a model with sliding/removable rear seats.
