Just been out and had a look at mine this afternoon- The sun was shining through it!
Didn’t realise how thin it is; just bumped up the priority of this job!

Steve, you said you’ve never been any good with glass fibre so your idea of strengthening it with gorilla tape sounds good. How they are made is unimportant, it’s a matter of how you can strengthen them so as long as you come up with a good solution all well and good. Be careful if you take them off to repair, as I said in my original post, the screw covers are a pain to remove to get at the screws so make sure you can get hold of some first. Good luck

Same problem went through on one side put some tape under it for now going to strengthen the other side with fibreglass and repair the side that’s gone through can’t get over how thin they are.

Just a thought about my "previous thought" about using some silver gaffer tape - I think it will work well until the dirt and damp underneath start to degrade the gaffer tape, then I suspect the gaffer tape won't come off without taking part of the wafer then plastic with it. Not so sure now

I've put a double layer of tape on mine.I might now add another layer.

Just had a look at mine. They must be thin because I could see my fingers through the plastic. Still in one piece though. Think I will reinforce them before long.

Also think calling it "wafer thin" is unfair on wafers. If I had a wafer that thin with my ice cream, I would complain!

I think I’ve solved mine people!
I had a Eureka moment last night, when I realised that I’d got a bit of leftover “Flash-band”, the stuff you can repair gutters and flashing with. It’s made of bitumen-like stuff with a plastic/metal outer, looking a bit like lead. I was going to buy so similar sound-deadening mats from EBay but this is pretty similar.
Didn’t need to remove the fairings.
I made some cardboard templates for the sides and cut 2 out, one the mirror-image so I’d got both sides. I allowed for tabs around the edges to stick to the solid parts of the plastic and it moulded around a treat with the help of the mrs’s hairdryer to warm it up and make it nice & tacky.
I’ve taken photos and marked up a template design with dimensions but can’t figure how to post these - can anyone recommend a platform to place the instructions on? Thought about “instructables” but it seems a bit specialist for that.
The end result looks quite neat and has firmed up the plastic nicely whilst not being too heavy. I couldn’t get around the top much because of clearances but it’s strengthened most of it.
Wouldn’t recommend it on your ice cream @stevejoyce but it looks good on the fairing. I’ll post the final photo on the Facebook thread that references this as I know how to do that. 👍

Well done Steve, stick on flashing sounds an excellent idea. I'm guessing you could scan the template or just take a photo, flat on, of the template with the width and depth on then members could cut and paste this into a rectangle of those dimensions and print off a template.

Posted on handsome Harry’s thread on book face.
I’ll figure it out and see if I can do a proper job.

Thanks to Steve for the photos above, and also explaining how to attach them.
Here are a couple of extra pictures showing construction and tabs I added to the shape to hold around the edges.

Look like dirty angel wings! 🙂

Wenn Sie hier auf Links zu eBay klicken und einen Kauf tätigen, kann dies dazu führen, dass diese Website eine Provision erhält.

If it helps I've downloaded the template in #25 and scaled it. If you print it off it's within a mm I think.
The cheapest I can find for the tape as a cut length is here:- Werbung: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281483469447?var=585519462368

Did a quick reinforcement of my front light mouldings yesterday which took about 15 mins max. As I already had some left over from another job, I used a couple of layers of glassfibre cloth which stuck really well considering I did it without removing the mouldings. Taped some polythene over it whilst it set, which gives it a nice smooth finish (and lets you smooth it out with your hand). This just falls away once it has set hard overnight. All looks quite solid now.

Flash(ing) Update:- I’ve just been under the van last weekend to do a bit of work on the spare wheel holder and noticed that the flashing which I put on at the end of October is gone! Both sides!
That means that it didn’t survive more than 2 trips. ☹️

I’m going to have to try again and do it better! (Once it gets warmer!)

Having read all I just have to say the only good repair is to use GRP. Remove the part and reinforce the section with a glass fibre build. It really is the only viable long term repair. Anyone unsure of how to do I’m sure Colin will advise. If not me.
