Thank you Aaron for the detailed how to, I'm sure it will help many people (not me, I have a different hitch)

What I'm interested in apart from the technical work is how you cleaned up the external parts, they look new!

Are they new?

All I did was spray it with engine cleaner, give it a good scrubbing with an old toothbrush and then wash all the muck off under the tap.

I've resurrected this thread to give an update as I've been amazed at the difference the overhaul has made.

Yesterday I towed for approximately 150 miles with none of the creaking and groaning that I'd become used to over the years. The caravan seemed to tow much more smoothly than before.

When I tried to uncouple at St Neots, I was a bit concerned when, having slackened off the ratchet I had to pull the red release lever quite firmly to get it to release.

I can only conclude that the worn seals in the stabiliser had seriously affected its performance and that replacing them has restored its original efficiency.

As you know Brian, I had several bits drop out of mine during our recent trip so I'm going to have to bit the bullet and change them some time. So far, touch wood, so good.

During today's 150 mile journey from St Neots to Howden we had to negotiate a few speed bumps and I realised from the silent way we went over them that I had become accustomed to thinking a sort of 'crunching', creaking noise was normal.

The improvement in the towing experience is very noticeable. Everything now feels 'right' somehow.

If you want a quick touch up - and who wouldn't - then you'll find that Humbrol Gloss 20 is an almost perfect match for the older Alko dark red.

This looks like the perfect winter project. Just wondering if there are any known torque settings for the Allen headed bolts holding the hitch to the drawbar?
