A storage project!

I’m lucky to be able to put our Troll in my workshop for storage. I’m fed up with the poor quality of the locker hinges so I’m going to replace them all with piano (continuous) hinges. I might even consider doing the toilet door too as I’ve read some reports of doors coming off during transit.
I will post some photos if there is interest. In the meantime a Merry Christmas to you all. Stay safe.

Derek, whilst a piano hinge will have many holes for a potentially better fixing it will give you another problem. The hinge material is wafer thin, resulting in the screws you fit becoming hinge bound as the heads will sit above the surface. You can get around this by purchasing "good" quality solid drawn brass hinge, but I doubt you will want to pay the £30/40 per meter it costs.
Back in 2017/18 after having 4 top locker doors replaced under warranty, I removed all of the doors and sorted the problem out. I countersunk each screw hole slightly deeper and re-fitted using a longer gauge screw and a dab of pva [actually Titebond 3 wood adhesive] instead of the epoxy resin favoured by some. 4 years later and very one of my hinges is solid, no movement, nothing is loose.
The hinge screwd that are fitted appear to be a 3mm gauge, but the heads are unusual in that they match a 2.5mm gauge screw and hence the reason to countersing the hinges.

Thought you might be quick on the draw here Colin! I fully understand the problem you mention but if you use the correct screws - 3.0 by 12mm countersunk this problem doesn’t arise. I’ve fitted two already with no problems. If you are worried about any hinge binding you can give the hinge an extra countersinking but my experience so far negates the problem you highlight.

Just taken a pic of the screw in the hinge. As you can see it sits well into the hinge and when closed the two leaves of the hinge are 3mm apart giving plenty of room for the heads of the screws. I’ll post photos when all the locker doors are done and the materials and cost.,?981BF10C-D02F-4116-94DE-2E3074EE9DB1.jpeg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

It would appear you are in luck. If you would like a better/chatter free finish on the csk then have a look at these:- https://www.axminstertools.com/fisch-pre...k-5-10mm-502161 I can assure you they are worth the money.

You can sometimes clean the surface up by running a "normal" csk bit in reverse for a few turns once down to depth.

Apologies Derek. I checked your profile before posting and it just said "Retired", so I've no idea of your history, previous occupation etc.

................................but it's good for us totally none-technical people to read you two experienced guys share solutions and have technical banter.

The morning we were taking our Troll in to be serviced an overhead locker door came off in Kath's hands. The dealer put it back and put some slightly larger screws in. This only looks to be a temporary measure. When we were in York three weeks ago I checked all the overhead doors and two others showed some movement. So at some stage, probably in early spring I will do something like Derek is doing or Colin has done.

I have never seen the "deburring thingy" that Colin referred to and Derek knew about - so I have got something useful from the thread.I look forward to Derek's photos of the finished jog.

Thanks to you both - this is what the forum is for for me.

Well here goes! I’m a little nervous having Colin looking over my shoulder at me being a teacher, lecturer and engineer doing a project, but I’m sure his expertise will be able to correct my obvious naive mistakes.
Materials bought from Screwfix: continuous hinges nickel plated grade 7 1000 by 32mm cost £1.99. These will do all the lockers and the bathroom door!
200 pack 3 by 12 Gold screw PZ double countersigned no multi purpose screws £1.99
First remove locker and original hinges. Measure and cut piano hinge to length. If you wish you can counter sink the holes but these hinges are not designed for the leaves to meet flush and when attached will be 3mm apart leaving plenty of room for the screw heads. The end result of this is that it lifts the locker door the same amount. See pic. But it does make the locker look a better cabinet fit.
A useful tip is to snip off the head of a panel pin and use it as a “drill” ! You will be able to centre it in the hole better than a drill. Use it like a drill!
Once you’ve attached the hinge to the door take it to the frame and fix. Put a screw in the middle first and close to see how it fits.[[File:4D558BC4-56A2-4207-9291-5A18EBBEB599.jpeg|none|auto]][[File:F6ED360B-9923-4510-B12A-1B5EB8416FD5.jpeg|none|auto]][[File:F6B160D6-DFFF-4844-A356-E3044E80978F.jpeg|none|auto

Blooming heck are we moving to butchery or taxidermy next - you know I'm a bit squeamish Colin. Kath's good with a blade though, she's from Burnley.!
